Default Strelitzia Mandelas gold dry from the inside

Hello,

I send enthusiastic banana greetings from Berlin, Germany.

In my strelitzia nursery with 130 plants more and more of the seedlings turn brown from the inside. It starts with a brown spot and then they dry down until the heart leave is dead. What could be the problem? Too dry or too wet? The plants are growing under artificial light in normal room temperature. They look healthy, but suddenly the weird dying process starts. I attached some photos in my gallery.

Best wishes and thank you

Stefan

I usually water them after they got quite dry. Once a week maybe. As their roots are more like a succulent I don't keep them wet constantly. The roots of the dying ones are not rotten, but also not fully white.

to dry way to dry. don't let them dry out. also mist your plants once, twice a day.

As Beam already stated, mist the plants. The roots have not developed enough to support the plant. So misting & folar feeding is needed. Your greenhouse humidity should be about 60& (may be 70%) to keep the plants above the soil from drying out. A misting system with timer is needed.

Next: ... From a couple of the pictures it appears the plants may have been potted too deep. The soil is up to the first leaves on the stalk. ... The top of the corm/roots needs to be just below the soil so the roots can breath.

Next: Also from the pictures, the potting soil looks to be too dense (???). This is difficult to judge from pictures, but needs to be said. What type of soil mix are you using? ... A 50/50% mix of commercial potting soil with added perlite should be about right for these plants. This is the key for the roots to breath and water to drain out of the pot. The pots need to drain to keep water fresh & not stale.

Anyway at this stage of plant propagation & growth, expect some losses, due to human errors & weaker plants.

Thanks a lot for your replies. This is very good advice. Especially concerning the density of the soil you might be right. I mixed regular soil with quite an amount of sand. As I collected the seeds in South Africa I thought it might imitate the soil well. But it is really heavy and gets very hard when it dries out. I'll try to find a way to repot them in maybe deeper pots and add more fluffy material like perlite. You said 50/50 ratio?

Thank you

Stefan

Use a commercial soilless potting mix & mix in 40% to 50% perlite. It is sterile. ... Do not use top soil from the yard. The dense soil will hold too much water and not drain well. The fine grains of the soil will compact into the spaces between the sand. ... The dense soil may be dry at the top 2" or so of the pot, but soggy wet at the bottom & roots.

Thats exactly how it is, yes. Dry as concrete on top, soggy wet at the bottom. I wonder how to do it now. Trying to take out as much of the old soil as possible without disturbing the roots too much? How would you do it? And what do you mean by soilless potting mix? Cocohum substrate or turf?

1. I wasn't aware that " Strelitzia Mandelas gold" is a seed strain. Are you sure that 100% of these will have yellow flowers?

2. Since strelitzia regina grows well in both southern California and Hawaii, it is insensitive to watering and humidity. But, since it has fat roots, the roots will eventually compress the potting media therefore you should use a potting media that will retain air after the media is compressed.

3. What kind of fertilizer and artificial light are you using? Does the potting media contain dolomitic lime?

Dear Arusinzky,

thank you for your reply.

1. I'm not sure about that. But I will see in a couple of years. It is about 120 Strelitzia Reginae Mandelas Gold and about 20 Strelitzia juncea.

2. I'm about to change the potting medium. I already ordered new pots.

3. I use fertilizer very delicately. It is a regular fertilizer of good quality that works perfectly fine for all of my banana plants for years. The lamps also did a great job for all kind of plants for years. It is Osram 840 4000K. There is no dolomitic lime.

Today I discovered new damaged plants. It is a bit worrying. It's 12 out of 140 now within a week. I though today if this is what 'burnt' leaves from fertilizer look like? Because it only affects the youngest leave. At the old ones roll slightly. I attached a new photo from tonight.

Best

I have never encountered those symptoms on strelitzia but I encountered very similar symptoms on potted canna 'Bethany' (Tropicanna Gold). The emerging leaf rolls would develop necrotic spots, stop growing, and die. This would force the plants to rapidly produce suckers but the individual plants never grew more than 8 inches high. (That was great for multiplying plants but that was not what I wanted.) And, root growth was very good, maybe, too good. After I transplanted outdoors in the ground, the symptoms disappeared and the plants matured and flowered normally. I never figured out the cause. I suspect that my potting media was too acid, but, my other varieties of canna grew well in it.

Thank you again. Interesting. I will keep you posted. 140 plants is quite a lot, to lose 1 out of 10 plants still fine. I think they require slightly acidic potting medium. Mine could be too basic due to high water hardness as well. The necrosis comes so quick, I couldn't figure out what may cause it.

Best wishes from Berlin!

Hello!

Just wanted to post an update. I replanted 155 Strelitzias in a new growing medium 50% turf and 50 % perlite. It planted them on the 23rd of December and after two weeks now they look really good. I'll keep you posted if interested.
