Default Soil Moisture

I have 8 25 gallon nursery pots and the bananas are growing great. I went to water the pots today because the top two inches were pretty dry but then before I watered I felt in one of the drain holes and the bottom was still wet from the last watering almost a week ago. Should I drill more drain holes in the bottom or sides or just let it dry out a little more before I water? These are your basic heavy duty 25 gallon Nursery pots with 6 1.5" drain holes around the bottom edge.

Thanks in advance,

Chris

I have those as well. I water or feed mine everyday. I guess it would all depend on your soil mixture to get a real answer. :^)

If you are using a peat moss pine bark perlite mixture your soil is going to drain adequately due to gravity every time you water. If you have some sand and peat you might want to back off but generally speaking potting soils are designed to leave plenty of airspace even when at capacity.

If the pot is indoors, I would be a little more stringent on watering. However, if it's outdoors and the top inch or more is bone dry, feel free to water. Maybe water less when you do water. For that size of pot, maybe half a gallon to a gallon per time you water is probably appropriate.

When my bananas were outdoors in the summer in the past, in 25 gallon pots, I would water a gallon once or twice a day, as needed (when top few inches were dry) with complete disregard to soil moisture lower than this or near the base of the pot. Basic rule I use: if the top inch or two is dry, water 1 gallon....do this as often as it needs it to be done.
