Hi all new to board and to banana plants. I recently developed a bad green
thumb so now it looks like bananas is my new hobby to an already extensive list.
Well like the title says my plant is about 2 feet tall at least the top foliage
What is the best size planter for it? I plan and fertilizing it lightly every watering...If anybody has a care sheet they could link me to that would great!

Hey welcome.
If you have a tendency to love your plant too much (e.g. overwatering) then don't get a pot too large and you need a good draining potting soil.

I don't claim my advice as expert, but I follow this example, if it is growing in a one gallon pot and needs repotting (the roots hanging out the drainage holes) then go up another pot level to a 2 or 3 gallon pot. And so on as the plant grows. I think the size of the rootball is more of a factor in choosing the next pot size.

From my experience, it is usually ok to overpot a banana into a really large pot since they aren't as likely to get root or corm rot, but it is still possible if conditions are right for it. Anyways, banana plants will eventually need large pots if you want for it to grow big and healthy.

musaboru thanks for response. Over watering is something I would do so I went a little smaller on pots than I wanted I hope this last atleast till next year

Ok well today I went out on bought a couple of pots. Im not sure but Id say about 3 1/2 gallons. I also picked up a pretty damaged DC the lower foliage was heavily beaten and removed after transplant.


I used a thick layer of perlite on the bottom for drainage, formi-lome cactus mix, mixed with some organic potting soil and some more perlite.
I added the rocks on top for looks and to hold the perlite down but that only lasted till its first watering.
Both plants were root bound so hopefully they take well to their new homes.
My bloodleaf as of today was very droopy leafed (inhalf) any reason for this?

Nice looking plants! Good that you put extra perlite towards bottom. I found that MG potting mix is great - mixed w/ extra perlite.
I'll bet they will outgrow those pots by August!!
15-5-30 w/ micro's is excellent fert. They like lots of potassium.

I'm with the others, just get the biggest pot you're comfortable moving if you intend to pot grow. The roots will quickly fill in. MG potting soil amended with perlite or chips or vermiculite or sand or charcoal or any combination thereof is great. The big thing is just to get enough amendment so that it holds water as well as being well drained. This can only be done by eye and a bit of trial and error to get the feel of it. Outstanding bloodleaf(and dog).
