Plantains for containers?
 

Hello. I did a couple searches for this, but i couldn't find anything. Could someone give me a list of plantains that would grow well in containers? From what i understand so far, Ornico can be used as a plantain, so the dwarf variety should work.

I think the dwarf puerto rican plantain would work.

The Super would work well. Need at least a 30 gal pot. Wider better than deeper. It's a short cycle. Fruit guaranteed in one season. Grow it out in the house where it's warm. If it's 4 to 5 ft tall after last danger of frost you should have fruit in the early fall.

I'd have to agree it i quicker, and I am sure if it was pushed with fertigation, it wold probably grow even quicker.

Thanks for your suggestions. For the super, i hardly doubt that any plant will be able to fruit in one season in New York, i would call it banana hell but hell's supposed to be hot, right?:ha: or maybe not for bananas...

but perhaps i could get that to fruit in two years. either way, thanks.

Ban13 ---- I used to live in Bklyn and you have May/June thru mid Sept to grow stuff outside. If you grew out the Super Plantain in the house to 5 ft and timed it so it could go outside in June that would be approz 4 months to grow the fruit. It flowers at 5 to 6 ft. That's the trunk height.

By mid Sept it gets cool. By that time the fruit would be filled in pretty much and it could go out and inside as weather dictates. Plantains can finish filling in in the house. Then call the Post and become famous. :08:

I was developed as a short cycle. More crops per year. More money for the farmer. And it's a plantain. Cash crop. Fruit bananas - not so much.

Iv'e also heard that the Hua Moa can grow in a container. Is this true?

I would agree with that cause the HM is fairly short cycle also. Always had a bunch by late spring. The fastest that I've seen is Viente Cohol.

I'll be planting a Hua Moa in an 85 gallon pot this week.

It outgrew it's 3 gallon pot in 3 weeks, grew 32 inches.
