New leaves on gran nain twisted.

I have a large gran nain, 7 foot at the top of the pseudo stem, that is potted in a 50 gallon pot and is 3 or 4 years old I always store it in my sunroom during winter and then bring it back out during late spring. Usually the first leaf or 2 that comes out is smaller or cold burnt, but this year the new leafs that are coming out are really weird. They start coming out looking normal, but then the mid rib does not twist and straighten out so the leaf ends up looking twisted and short and bunched together. Any thoughts on what might be going on would be appreciated. Thanks in Advance.

Did you change how you watered or fertilized? Never seen that before. I will be watching this thread to see what the experts say. Good luck!

Fertilizing hasn't changed still using banana fuel per the label instructions, the only thing that has really changed is that the weather has been much hotter and drier this year then any year I have lived here. But I am still watering after the soil is dry on the top 1/2" inch. All of the other 16 bananas I have are growing fine just this gran nain.

Yes I know about the hotter drier weather this year. Mild winter followed by drier spring followed by hotter drier summer. I am south of Olympia and I know this year is a lot different than years before. How long have you lived in Mill Creek? Many do a pup swap sometime?

Thanks for the compliment I wish I could figure out what is going on. I was kind of hoping this was the year I would get a flower. Oh well it's an excuse to keep going to prove to my wife it can be done in Washington.

I cant say its the same thing, but my Sikkimensis started out with smaller twisted leaves, thickened veins and overall reduced leaf area, then the leaves started becoming necrotic and severe. In your pic showing the leaf twisted, it appears to have reduced leaf area, and thickened veins, there also appears to be heavy parallel lines on the leaf to the midrib, another similar symptom. I discovered my issue was calcium deficiency, gave it a dose of gypsum, and now calcium nitrate and it has resolved itself. Not sure if Banana fuel has calcium, Miracle grow does not.

Well, there is a new twist to the story. I went out this morning to water before it got to hot and figured I would check and see how the Gran Nain was doing and found this. I can't believe it finally after 4 years a flag leaf. Now I can rub it in to my wife that you can grow bananas in Washington State.

Well that's great! My best chance for a flower this year is my Truley Tiny or my Basjoo. Keep the updates coming.

I wonder since it can take 6 months for the bananas to ripen if I should move it into my sunroom now instead of leaving it outside for couple more months and trying to move it in and breaking the stalk off. Any thoughts would be helpful.

Just an update on the progress I was gone on vacation for a week but the flower has now fully come out and the first couple of petals are starting to roll up. The flower is 18" long itself and looks pretty cool. In the middle couple of pictures you can see the bananas starting to develop.

Congrats on the flower, its beautiful! I do believe your initial problem was a calcium deficiency, caused either from lack of Ca in the soil, or not enough water to absorb all the Ca required by the plant. How much are you watering? I would give that plant a dose pf Ca if you can. Also I would probably leave it outside so it can fill all the fruit out in the sun/heat before you bring it in, just be careful and support the bunch when transporting.

Thanks for the advice I will have to run down and grab some at my nursery and see if the helps. I usually water when the top 0.5" or 1" is dry and I will water just enough to see the water to start and come out the drain hole except when fertilizing and then only enough so the water doesn't start to drain.
