Default New to banana plants, few questions.

Hi, picked up my first banana plant the other day, and got a couple quick questions. It’s a Musa Murelli type with a red tinge to the leaves, it’s has four two foot long leaves with a total plant height of about five feet. It came in a small 6” nursery pot, which is root bound, and most of the leaves are browning.

What size pot should I upgrade to ? I have read to big can cause root rot. Also, what can I do to combat the browning ? The plant is otherwise healthy with a beautiful new leaf emerging. I’ll be transplanting with regular pro mix, couldn’t find the cactus type.

Thanks, Fred.

Where are you located and what USDA growing zone are you in? This size plant is ready to be put in the ground. But if you need to keep it in a pot, use 18" or 24" dia minimum with drain holes. And use a potting mix of 50%/50% commercial mix & perlite.
