Need help choosing variety
I already have 2 varieties of banana in containers in New Jersey zone 6. Both grow to 5 ft or so. I am looking for another variety to grow taller, maybe stem height 7 to 9ft. I can put into large container to give enough room.
Here is what I ideally want: -container grown, cut and brought into garage for winter dormancy -no need for fruit, ornamental purpose -nj zone 6 -stem 7 to 9 ft -wind resistant with less leaf splitting -ideally used for shade in sunny pool area I have been reading alot on the forum and have ideas but struggling to settle on a variety, any help would be appreciated to recommend a suitable variety. Thanks. Last edited by Jvspyder : 07-31-2020 at 09:36 PM. |

Re: Need help choosing variety
I have a zebrina and unknown dwarf green banana given to me. Both stems get only 4ft high. Looking for something taller to cast a little shade.

Re: Need help choosing variety
Well then, if you are willing to overwinter indoors, your options are very numerous indeed. I will defer to other memebers who have more direct experience with growing big bananas in containers, but you might check with subsonicdrone or cincinnana (many others too but handles escape me at the moment) as they both live in similar climate zones and are, from my perspective, container banana growing gurus;-)

Re: Need help choosing variety
Just curiously, is there a reason you don't want to/can't put something in the ground?

Re: Need help choosing variety
I did not want to put into the ground just so that I have the option to move around. Not exactly sure where I want to have them.
