Cold My indoor lighting experience.

I'm live in Ohio and cold weather is coming and I can't make myself to winterize them and take the chance on losing them. I went and bought some 6 bulb and a 8 bulb t5 lighting fixtures and I haven't really slowed down watering( not saying you should do what IM doing) but mine are doing great. I have them in my extra room and I have 3 dwarf and one basjoo with other plants. My older ones have 20 leaves (big ones) and under the t5 lights next to a window that only has good sun the second part of the day and it's growing a new leaf every 3-5 days :-).

So for the people with lighting questions I hope this helps. I'm using T5 54watt bulbs with the lights being 2-3 inches above them with a fan blowing between the tallest leaf and the fixture so they lights can stay a little cooler.

p.s. Im looking for a ice cream and dwarf lady finger before ths cold weather keeps me from getting them .. Thanks and good luck

i havent seen any yet this year either although it has been a problem the last couple winters
it was easy enough to treat with predatory mites (about $45 CAD)

i read that wetting the surfaces of the plant makes it less hospitable
for the mites to breed so i am trying to avoid them in the first place

if you do end up needing predator mites... spidex worked for me
but spical (californicus) does better with short photoperiod
(spidex will not multiply in 12 on 12 off)

anyhow sorry off on a tangent here,,,,,

No worries. I'm glad you said something cause when someone using the search button and puts in spider mites and lighting this post will pop up. I'll try to post pics of my babies.

Joy My indoor lighting experience.

I have a 14' X 8' X 21'H indoor arboretum. I have 5 skylights that get the morning sun and two suntubes that bring in light during the day from a southern exposed roof. I have placed 4 foot single bulb t5's with 6500k bulbs between each plant vertically so all the leaves will receive light. Has just been this way for several weeks now and so far so good.

We will see.

Default My indoor lighting experience.

They have been in for 2 weeks and still have leaves popping out; But that may be still from being outside. I am going to try to keep arboretum around 60*f at the coolest during the winter. We usually keep the house cool in the winter but the arboretum is surrounded by heated spaces except for the ceiling/roof. I will have the fish tanks in operation by year end so that will generate some more heat. This is a monster in the making.

I'm in Ohio too and I brought my GM in a couple weeks ago.

I bought a MH lighting kit and it is generating a lot of light. But before I brought it in I had to dig it up and cut off the daughter plant, which was so close to the main it was choking off the leaves, so I had to remove it. Between the surgery and the change to artificial light, it is sustaining, but not growing. I suspect it will resume in a few weeks once it is finished healing and adapting. Leaves are still being produced, but significantly slower than when it was outside.

I tried a 400watt MH and I didn't see any growth. Maybe my hortilux blue light was old or idk.. I have a 1000 watt system with a hps bulb. I might try once they get over 25 leafs. I would go with t5 system

Seriously? The T5 is working better for you for the banana? I can easily swap out those fixtures if it gets better results.

Yes sir, way faster and as soon as the leaf opens up a little for me to see in there, there is another leaf forming. Pretty awesome

Oh I have 54watt 6500k bulbs. 6 on at once VERY VERY BRIGHT

could be bunching up or choking
might only be from the cold...

personally i use HPS
the HPS bulb is 155 000 lumens (1000W)
MH bulbs are 115 000 lumens (1000W)

people may argue over whether lumens are a good measure
or if the spectrum is ideal and what not but you get a lot of punch from HPS

people have told me that MH run hotter as well

you got both bulbs with youre kit right?
look up the #s on the bulbs

but then again i have never had multiple leafs per week unfurl as some people claim

Richard says the best indoor set up are T5's side by side for 100% coverage
probably works out to near the same watts per 4' x 4'
but a more ideal spectrum

so there you have it... T5s are the best but HPS should work too
