I just hope it survives indoors, thats the main challenge LOL.

Re: Musa Bordelon
I have one that I'll be digging up and trying to do the same thing. I'm also hoping to leave it outside next year (chopped down and heavy mulch)... also in 7/8 zone border....

Re: Musa Bordelon
Hi Mike. I saw on a few websites that it can be grown from zone 8a-11. I might just dig it up every year or leave it in the ground. Once it gets bigger and produces pups, i'll leave the main plant in the ground and bring some pups inside. I guess it would be marginally hardy here. I'm just hoping that I wont lose it during winter. I lost 3 bananas last winter . I had one that did ok indoors and then I could tell it was getting tired of the lower light levels and it started to decline. So I'll probably chop it down and mulch it next year like you said

Re: Musa Bordelon
I had one a few years back that I've since given away. It did spectacularly indoors its first 2 winters so I wouldn't give it a second thought. It never even got spider mites as I recall though others did. You might want to give it till next year before you try it outside though. Bigger corms should be hardier in a marginal climate... basjoo's are up here anyway.

Re: Musa Bordelon
Thanks Bob. I'm glad to hear that you had success with growing it indoors. I definitely want to plant it in the ground next year. I've never had spider mites before but i'll still use my humidifier like I did last year. I'll have to check before I bring all my plants in. I couldnt believe all the pups it has already and its barely a foot tall. I counted 11 pups on it.

Re: Musa Bordelon
A member of this forum has some in zone 6 next to his house that he left out for winter. So I think you would be good in 7. No reason to repot now it would probably not even fill in the new dirt.
Yes the bordello is a vigorous pupper, and a distant thrower. In my experiment ornamentals need a lot more size before separating. |
Re: Musa Bordelon
Wow that's good to know. Ill leave it in the ground next year. Did the other member cover his with a lot of mulch? I put it in a new pot yesterday,I should have waited. It was incredibly root bound. The pot is a shallow pot but its a little wide. I'll definitely wait until it gets bigger to start separating it. Thanks for the info.
