How late is too late to divide and repot?
 
Zone 8a. Dwarf Cavendish in pots that are way too small.

Plan is to bring them inside late October when overnight temps start dipping way below 50f.

I have performed the surgery as late as Early August...

I'm pretty much a novice with bananas, but if your banana(s) are going to go dormant at all, I'd hold off dividing until the weather warms up next spring. I feel like the risk of infection would be elevated if the roots were necessarily cut just prior to dormancy. If you're going to keep it warm and growing somewhere, I think the risk would be a lot less.
