Hello! I've been growing indoor bananas for about 7 years. I have had two harvests and I thought I was quite experienced already. However, the last year or so, I have not seen any suckers. I have two large (almost fully grown) plants and one younger one (2 ft). All are Dwarf Cavendish. By now I should have seen suckers, but there are none! What could be the problem? (The plants seem otherwise healthy.)

In zone 2 the growing season is short so the plant may not be old enough to produce pups in relation to actual growing time. ... corms also produce pups when the main maristem becomes damaged in some way.

Thank you. Are you suggesting I torture the plants a bit? I am afraid the plants are getting older and that they will be fruiting before they produce suckers. Then it will be too late. Perhaps I need to be more patient.

I would threaten them before doing physical harm. What are you feeding them?

No ... not unless you want to reproduce more plants. Take a look at this thread to see what I was referring to" First macro propagation attempt


... Banana varieties take from 280 to more than 300 warm growing days before fruiting. In the tropics this is not a problem. Look up your varieties to find the correct timing. But our growing zones the cold non-growing days of winter makes the time extend to years. ... You are growing in a house I don't see that shortens the time very much since they are not in a temperature/humidity controlled greenhouse.

I used to feed 20-20-20 and had lots of suckers and even fruit. But i havent been able to find thatbfoe a long time so i bought 24-8-16 and supplemented with liquid 2-5-2. I only used those briefly and then stopped because I noticed way too many roots crowding the pot when I dug one of them out. I trimmed the roots and replanted. New good soil too. Soni have fertilized for along time, but the plants look good otherwise. I wish I could find 20-20-20 again.

question all - are not two pounds of 10 10 10 equal to one pound of 20-20-20? If so, does that not answer the question ? If not , I fail to really understand what the numbers mean :-( (And have asked many people for an answer and can't get one!)
