Half 55 Ga Water Barrel

I have a spare half barrel container which I've already drilled drainage holes on.
A little less than half was cut off so lets call it a 30 Ga container

I have several dwarf varieties but I would like to propagate Blue Java some more.

Would 30 Ga be sufficient to fruit a Blue Java or should I stick with dwarf varieties?

Hi Valor,

I think that is adequate. I am doing the same with a 55 gal barrel which is equivalent to some pots that I've used for fruiting orinoco and patupi.

The only problem is there isn't much room for pups when the main plant reaches full size. Large pups may deform the pot and/or be difficult to remove.

Yes, go ahead and try it.
I use the ugly blue barrels too.
They are adequate however bigger is always better.
Many past forum members have used them.
The need to stake the container of a mature plant might become necessary during high winds and fruiting. Mine tip on occasion.

Thats a good point! I have had full size plants tip over in the pots after heavy rains and winds usually during the fall when they are full size. If I feel a banana may reach full size during the growing season, I sometimes remove them from the pots in spring and just plant in the ground.

Yes it's one of the ugly blue barrels :ha:

Great point on wind potentially tipping over the banana especially one that grows tall like Blue Java.
I'm thinking of wedging it in a corner of my fence and then I could also place a stake in front of it to lock it in place.

Also, there are some members that need to purge their inboxes because not one piece of mail can be jammed in there.... :)

I ended up changing my mind and transplated a PR Dwarf Plantain pup instead.
It's droopy since I moved it a week ago but should start growing soon.
