![]() Once I order my banana, I want to be sure I'm using the right soil and fertilizer. I read peat mixed about half and half with perlite is good. Should I do that? It'll be in a pot, indoors. Also, I have Dyna-Gro Foliage-Pro 9-3-6 fertilizer that I've read is good for all houseplants. Would that be good for a banana? (I don't care if it fruits or not). Thanks!

![]() Fluorescents don't get hot enough to burn the plants, anyway, so they can grow right into the lights without causing damage.

![]() That depends on the fluorescent bulb. I would not try it with 4' VHO 6500K bulbs. In this case the heat is not the issue, it is the light intensity.

![]() As for fertilizer I've been using miracle grow shake & feed tomato and fruit formula so far its working great. Its relatively cheap and you can find it just about anywhere.
Any cheaper and you could throw down compost and chicken manure

![]() Ok here's the thing, I can't figure out how to start a new thread or ask a question on here so i am going to ask it here and hopefully someone can and will answer it for me, I am very new to this, I bought a Ice Cream Blue Java banana tree and planted it in a large pot with miracle grow moisture control potting soil, the plant started wilting and the leaves are browning, so i bought some peat moss and dug a hole in the ground and put meat moss in with my miracle grow, about half and half and watered it to get the air pockets out of the dirt, Will this help my plant? and what is the best potting soil to get to use to help my plant survive? Please send me a message and give me a couple names of the soil, fertilizer and whatever i need to help my banana tree survive and grow, thank you

Your soilless mix is a fine choice.....stop using meat moss ![]() Your choice of fertilizer will work for you also and your new plant will respond soon. Since you said you put the plant in the ground and amended the soil, that is the best soil mix you can get!!! Use the search button for most of your questions.....just use key words such as fertilizer, soil, water, and read the posts. Check out Youtube keyword" grow bananas"......good stuff there . That will answer a lot of your questions also.......but with VIDEO. Post a photo of your plant so we may see what the issue is. Last edited by cincinnana : 05-27-2015 at 04:56 AM. |

![]() Nanners are funny about change. They can adapt, but its best to make changes slowly. Fertilizer, sun, indoor/outdoor, etc......
Slowly throttle up sloooowly as you see progress To give you a idea a new tissue culture will start out against my house under the awning. 2 weeks later I will move it 2 feet closer to the sun, then another 2 feet every week till its in full sun

![]() If all else fails, you might try google or wiki, which has helped me a lot. When you search, just put 'wiki' in with the other search terms. There can be a wide range of alternate opinions, and you can decide what makes the most sense to you. Keep us posted! I'm about to buy a couple of banana plants myself, one micro-nanner 'Truly Tiny', and 'dwarf red'. (Is that actually a species?) I also have seedlings of m.velutina that just started. coming up.
I guess that officially qualifies me as a banana wrangler! Rick in CT |

![]() That's a new term on this site! But curiously there is already an emoticon for it:

![]() I didn't know about putting Wiki in my search. Good idea. Yes, I've noticed there are a lot of varying opinions on banana care and soils. That is why I came here. You guys should know better than anyone, this the whole board is just bananas! Funny, huh? And I loved the banana wrangler. Got a good laugh out of that and the Yee-haw with bananas on horses.
