Here s my dc in a good size pot. What height do they bloom at roughly in containers??

Nice! Is it recommended to use self watering pots? I have a dwarf cavendish currently in a 10 inch ceramic pot with a hols in the center for drainage. I have no idea how often I should water my cavendish.....I think using a self watering pot is ideal when the bottom tray has no water fill it up. then add more water when empty. Is this a good idea anyone? Thanks

Ten inch pot?!? You need to upgrade a few sizes I think. As for the self-watering pots, I love them. I've been using them on a lot of my palm seedlings, pineapples, and other experiments. However, the largest of those pots I have I would only use on a juvenile banana, they just need more room than most plants in a container ranch. When I dig up the corms this fall I will be putting them in storage in the basement, but I may put a few in a 20-30 gallon black bucket tote if I think they're close to flowering (and hope to keep them happy over the winter).

If you want it to grow you will need a bigger pot. I had my SDC in a 16 gallon pot and moved it to a 21 gallon plastic wine barrel liner and it just shot up. I am hopeful the 21 gallon will be big enough for my SDC to bloom in, as a bigger pot will not fit in our house.

How much sun should DC get? I have mine pot bound and at 13 inches tall. Also, how hardy are they if I leave it overnight outside? And how often should I water? I noticed that the leaves are bleeding water drops, is this normal?

Mine did fine last summer as a juvenile plant in 75- 85 F. But start it in some semi-shade for a couple week so you can let it adjust so you do not burn the leafs in the noon sun.
Our summer night lows are around 45-50ish F and my SDC was actively putting on leafs.
My plant transpires when it is it happiest it seems.

Is it best to keep my DC moist not wet in container? OR let the pot dry out before watering completely? Or if the soil is an inch deep dry, then water it. Just need an idea on when to water and to prevent over watering....

Icebanana80 Hopefully you have soil that drains and does not have soil retention ingredients in it. But either way you do not want it too wet like you said. It's best to let the soil dry a bit between waterings. I let the topsoil fairly dry about an inch down but not completely bone dry.

Ya definately let the soil dry out before watering again. I let the soil pull in from the sides of the pot a bit then soak the soil thoroughly, then repeat.

so about 60 degrees average night time temperatures will be OK to leave my Dwarf Cavendish plant outside overnight?

Doesnt matter the average....whats the low? If lows are above 50 ure good to go!

Most definitely ok, it will be active and growing above 50F. Below 50F it will be fine too, growth will just slowdown.

I think 50F is the halting point for growth. With DC's choking problems I would keep it growing, and be on the safe side.. :^)

Some bananas are ok colder than 50, but I find cavendish varieties don't like it very much at all. I will put mine out if min temps are above 45F (6-7C) but that's only because I have such a short growing season, the benifits of the strong sun out-weight the damages. Gotta get em in the "holy ****, spring is finally here!" mode asap.

Matt do you have all your plants outside yet?
