so far it is a foggy and wet but warm day
time to bring many plants inside

the hua moa is very pissed off and i noticed just now it is also unstable and can be easily wobbled back and forth.......

so i got most of them inside
most of the ones that remain outside, i am going to try to store them dormant
i thought i would be able to leave them out a while longer
the forecast for tomorrow night is 2C so they might all need to be dug out and put in the garage tomorrow

these ones are still outside


still need to do some reorganizing
need to spin the plumeria a bit it is too close to the light
make pathways.. see if there is space for some small stragglers outside still

I have to say, I really admire you guys who grow tropicals in the colder climates.. so much work goes into keeping your plants going! I dread our "winters" and the minor preparations I have to make to ensure my plants survive the handful of frosts we have over our 2 month cod season.. hats off to you guys!

below zero is another level! edit:32F i try to get mine inside well before it reaches those temperatures!

this morning i may have seen a little frost on a neighbours roof
with a forecast of 2C last night i figured there could be a chance of frost
so i was retrieving plants from friends and family in the mid day and worked right into the night
digging up plants, knocking the soil off and putting them in an unheated garage somewhat upright
i plan to make an insulated box and heat it with a bucket and fishtank heater once the temps in the garage get too low
i also separated a few pups from the varieties which i did not have a back up copy

the only plants left are one i forgot about at a friends place who might end up keeping it
the basjoo which is in the ground and i plan to mulch it heavily and keep it out there
also a small basjoo which i need to figure out what i am going to do with it

i know these plants are not in pots but for continuity i am going to post some pics here
not last night but the night before it was -3C when i checked on the plants in the morning
the basjoo was relatively unscathed



last night it was colder for a longer period and when i got up to check on the plants it was -6C or 7
the basjoo seemed like it took it pretty well but as the sun came up it started to show the signs of damage






i built a box for my dormant pstems
i have not set up the heating yet but temps in the garage are ok for now

In the last picture, the stem still looks green. I wonder if the black/deadish leaves might have some insulation value, perhaps wrapping them around the green stem...

Where are you located...is that snow on the ground?

this is in toronto, canada and yes that is snow

my plan is to chop the stem to 1 foot or so and mulch heavily
and yes it is still green under there
after those cold couple days there was about a week of nice weather and the plant has even grown a bit

i am still waiting to give it the chop...

i noticed yesterday that i have my first pup on the hua moa emerging!

With a marker you can document the plants daily push on the new leaf.
You will see when the plant stops.
In your area this is invaluable for predicting events.
Your plants and technique are first class .
This will let you gain some new insight for that plant.

two of my balbisiana made it despite being messed with by squirrels non stop when they were outside
they are not growing "dangerously fast" as advertised yet but i did notice they gain a fair bit of pstem height with each new leaf




i had some other seeds which i had given up on and placed in a community pot and sure enough some sprouted
no label now so they will be mysteries although two of them seem to be ensete ventricosum
i hope one is velutina as i would like to have that variety as well and they were among the "failed" seeds
here are a group of little ones... tiny pups, seedlings and the new varieties i had ordered from sddarkman

it has been a mild winter so i am pretty optimistic about the basjoo


did some potting up... mostly the bananas i got from sddarkman but also some from seed



this one thai black pup is growing quickly


i have to show off my pineapple too... its huge
no signs of flowering yet

thanks cincinnana, i thought the cold might transmit through the retaining wall
this year it is so mild i am worried i might be cooking them in there!
looking forward to trying to get a basjoo to overwinter up north in zone 2/3
also i think i will try to store dormant pstems up there as well
