Bananas in underground area without sun? :)
Hello! I bought this banana plants in Thailand, so I can't identify it properly, now I'm in Eastern Europe, during summer I was growing it in partly opened veranda but now it's looks like getting cool for them (+9C at night) so I decided to move them to the big underground area we have with super big concrete walls (+20C and 70% humidity all year round there). The only one problem is the lighting
My question is - can banana plants live in that condition with only artificial lighting? Now I have only 8 small lamps like this (15W each): Maybe I will buy few more, but is it real at all to make them living with such lamps without sun? Or need much more bigger lamps? |

Re: Bananas in underground area without sun? :)
I winter mine over in my basement 55ºF to 60ºF, some in pot's some bare root. The ones in pot's get light from a couple 4ft fluorescent's and very little water, the bare root ones get very little light and no water. Your plants will slow down or may go dormant. The purpose is to keep them alive until warmer weather. Let them dry out before watering, they are using very little water, over watering will rot the roots.

Green leaves are still functional, brown are not,
I half some big green leaves just for easier storage. |

Re: Bananas in underground area without sun? :)
I should be just like growing them in a grow room or basement.
There are a number of forum members that store their plants in pots under artificial lights during the winter months. They will reduce the footprint and height of the plant by cutting leaves for a better fit in the winter grow area. This also allows you to fit more plants under lights economically. Quote:
I pull the potted plants from the landscape line them up spray them for pests a few times (pot, soil and plant)cut the leaves and move them inside. The leaves are replaced with new spring growth almost like nothing happened. Plants being cut and prepared for indoors by Hostafarian, on Flickr .Double click on the photo to see more. Re: Bananas in underground area without sun? :)
Ive grown some bananas as well as peppers under lights im my garage. They actually continue to grow, and the peppers will flower and fruit. I do however have a much larger full spectrum LED grow light. If your space is above say 60F, they should grow.. below that they will likely be dormant.
