banana plant going brown
Hi I'm new here and wonder if someone could help me with some information please. I just received a musa basjoo on Thursday. I have been watering it daily. Today I transplanted the 3' plant with 3 baby plants into a bigger container. After inspecting my handywork I noticed some brown edges on the green leaves (no yellow), even on one of the little plants. Is this normal? I live on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. I don't recall seeing this before but am not sure. Does anyone know why this might be happening? I appreciate any and all comments. Thank you.

Is this plant outdoors? If so, they may need acclimation to the sun if they were indoor plants before you got them. I also wonder if they need daily watering. If these are M. basjoo, why don't you plant them outdoors? I only water if mother nature goes dry. Good luck, and welcome.
PS- ponds. eh? Post a pic of your pond(s) in your gallery. There are a number of members here who maintain ponds, water gardens, etc. |

Thank you for the info. It came from Costco so was likely under cover and is now outside on my deck. I'll keep an eye on it. I did post some pics of my back yard with the ponds as asked.

Re: banana plant going brown
When I got mine as babies last year, they, too, went brown. For each new leaf they let up, another one shrivelled up to nothing. I watered them more, less, didn't seem to help. It was February, I couldn't put them outside at that time!
Once the weather got nicer, I acclimated them to the outdoors/sun slowly....eventually, they were out all day long on nice days. They took that well. But around Memorial Day, I planted them outside, and they looked HORRIBLE after awhile. I guess they got sunburnt anyway. But, they were putting out leaves much faster...and eventually the old ones quit dying. By the end of summer, they were huge, (compared to what they were), green, and healthy. So give 'em time.... |
Re: banana plant going brown
That may be because of the lack of the nutrients and fertilizers or it can be because of the lack of the grow lights as in the indoor system this are the main factors and if doing it outdoor than the good amount of sunlight will cause this kind of damage to the plants.
