Default Red Mites?!?!

I was out pruning my banana plants at the farm today and much to my surprise there were red mites all over the lower leaves of my plants. Now I have seen mites in a greenhouse situation or perhaps in a dry year, but I have had 7+ inches of rain at my farm so it has been rather wet. I am wondering if perhaps it is the red palm mite, but I will likely not know until later this week when I can get them under a scope.

They look like itty-bitty ticks. I take it they are bigger than chiggers?

They are a little bigger than a 12 font period. I took a sample today, I will get them under the scope tomorrow and if I can't identify them, I will send them to Gainesville for identification.

They were spider mites and they are being killed off by a fungus, so I have a little breathing room. It's amazing what you can find out at 40x magnification.
