Before anyone chastises me if this has been posted before, I looked and I didn't see it.

I went and looked at may bananas yesterday, like I do every day. They have been growing but when I looked yesterday I noticed rot. It smelled kinda fishy or like the ocean. So I started cutting back till I didn't see brown. Bummed me out a little.

My questions are:
1. Is this normal after winter in a zone like 9b?
2. How do I prevent or limit this from happening next year?

Thanks for any help you guys/girls can give.

Yep, pretty much normal operating procedure after cold & wet conditions.

Eliminating or just reducing the mischief will involve some work, much of which is not very practical so you may want to just focus on improving temperature & moisture control as much as possible.

Sounds good, thanks for the help.

I think next year I will try some of the stuff from the thread "Winterizing". I will also try to control moisture somehow. If I come up with something clever I will post it.

Cold and wet will do it every time. It seems worse when you get a cold snap while the plant is pushing a cigar leaf which stops the growth. Then it rains and fills up the cigar leaf which just sits there and creates rot.
