Default May have damaged the tree...help!

So I was given 3 tall banana trees to plant in my backyard. They were tall, 1 leaf, if that and looked kinda rotten at the top. They said just pull the outer layers off until it nice and green. So I did that, 2 are great but the 1 I may have skinned too much because it wants to droop over now. I had to stake it up a little even...that isn't working so hot either. Did I damage the plant? Also, should I have cut it shorter so it could start new shoots?

Pics would help a lot! If I get one too weak like that for whatever reason I just cut it back and let it regrow strong. Staking, etc is just delaying the cutting usually. Sooner the better
