Default malformed leaf

Hi does anyone know what may have caused this leaf to become malformed? It came out like this and isn't slug or snail damage.

I'm guessing glassy winged sharp shooter... or a Jap beetle.

I'm not sure it's a bug, they appeared like that. Besides I'm not sure we get jap beetles in this country.

It might have been a bird who took some pieces out before the leaf
unfolded.
Ive seen this before and know they sometimes do that.
Do you happen to have many little birds in the garden lately?

Ron...

This happened a LOT on my E. Maurelii last summer. I don't believe it has anything to do with predation, but something due to conditions (possibly too wet). From my experience, this plant is very fastidious and particular (a diva of the plant world) and never did well for me here cause it rains a lot and is apparently too moist for it to grow correctly. A lot of the leaves during mid-summer had portions missing like that or were otherwise deformed even with regular fertilization.

Maybe not the cause....but there are my two copper Lincolns.

Looks like BSV. Gabe needs to see this as it's what he's working on. Is it a Mysore? Looks like one and if so they do carry the gene.

It's a sikkimensis that I grew from seed. BSV doesn't sound good

My Mysore has done that in the past and shown mild streaks too but they can also grow out of it like mine did. Not sure if Sikkimensis carries the gene.

It's caused due to developmental conditions, too wet, or something it doesn't like. It can be caused too by mechanical damage, something bumped it hard when it was still rolled up

My two cents is that something damaged it when it was still rolled up.

Yes - I would grow with a knock or scrape from something in the early days of the leaf.

Also - welcome back The Flying Dutchman - you have been missed!!!

Maybe a nutrient problem. I have had similar problems too and mine were cured by holding back on the water but nutrients can cause these symptoms as well. I would try the water first if it were me. I'm still a little new so I'm kinda just guessing.
