Default Leaves 'STUCK'

The top 2 leaves are fully opened but not out all the way & have no stem (petiole) showing. There is a leaf coming out trying to unfurl & a leaf inside THAT one - like a cigar unfurling, AND a leaf inside that one. Why are they stuck? Maybe I should fert? Its been in the sunroom & because it's cool in there (ave 59*), the nanas haven't been growing much if at all, over winter. This Truly Tiny is truly trying. Maybe put it in warm west window?
A leaf in a leaf in a leaf. It looks healthy otherwise - & it's about 4 1/2 yrs old. Thanks for opinions & advice.

Sometimes this is evidence of the need for repotting to a larger pot. When this happened to me with my DC, I had to cut the leaves to allow the new leaf out.

That is happening to me now with some that I have over wintering inside in pots. Seems to happen every winter and I just pull and cut to give the inner ones room and pray that the weather warms up fast so they can be transplanted outside asap! Sounds like yours has always been in a pot .. maybe the bigger pot idea is a good one too.

Good luck!

Cool Re: Leaves 'STUCK'

What variety is it? This apparently is more prone to some than others. A few of mine are like that too. Raja Puri is kind of known for it.

Howard, you were absolutely right!!!! I thought...nah, can't be rootbound. I potted up twice last year -spring & fall. All of a sudden in last 2 years it is growing fast. I took it out of pot & sure 'nough - rootbound. It was in about a 4 gal pot (not actually 4 gal by volume) so I drilled holes in a 5 gal (real gal) bucket & gave it some fert & a sunnier place.
So, thanks Howard Deb, maybe you should check the roots(?)

Hey Bob, it's Truly Tiny. 22 inches high & 12 1/2" p stem.

I just got done pulling the leaves down on another nana today. Was a pup we chopped off in the fall and put in a pot to over winter in the house. It sure looks pathetic right now. Water just poured out of it when I peeled back the outter leaves and the stuck leaf was real light green and by this evening part of it has turned dark green and looking better.

Now I'm noticing it's happening to my Dbl Mahoi. There is a big cigar coming out of a unfurled leaf. I don't remember this ever happening before, or at least not this bad. I don't think the mahoi is rootbound - I potted up to 30 gal last spring/summer.
C'mon summer!

You know after looking around at all the nanas I have inside waiting to be put back into the ground, most of them seem to have the choking leaves and the only thing that is different for them inside verses outside in summer is that I don't water as much or fertilize more than maybe once during the winter and the growth slows way down which is what I want for in the house. I don't know how you are maintaining your growth rate but the slow growth is the only thing I can see on my end with that problem. Mayb the burst of fertilizer that I recently gave them caused a NEW growth spurt to happen before the other leaves were all the way out? I do know that it's happened before during winter and once they get back outside everything works it'self out but I end up peeling leaves back at end of winter on some that are the worst.

I have had this problem for a little while with my Daj Giants ( see post "glued cigars"). What I did was to take a 409 bottle and blast the "stuck" portions of the leaf margins with water, hydraulically causing them to unstick, and the leaves continued to grow normally after that. My plants are definitely not rootbound, as the though of that keeps me up nights, and I make sure they don't have pinched feet. I am not sure of the reason, but after the plants got bigger, this seemed to stop. If the leaves can't unfurl properly, the new leaves will continue to grow up inside them and become a twisted mess! Try this and see what happens.. Good luck!

Thanks Parid, but they aren't stuck as if glued. The growth is stuck & it's getting worse. The stem part won't come up & out of previous leaf. Truly Tiny has 5 leaves 'stuck' like this & a new one coming. They can't unfurl.
Dbl Mahoi has leaves out but no stem on about 6 leaves. They are right on top of each other. What is causing this? Maybe I should do surgery.

That is exactly what happens to me but only during overwintering inside. When they go in the ground... everything corrects itself. I'll be interested to know if yours corrects it's self Patty since you've had your TT quite awhile and stays in a pot. This summer I'm keeping two DO's in a pot outside and hoping they correct themselves like the ones going in the ground.

Great pic Tony! Hope you don't mind me jumping on your thread with a similar problem Patty!

Here you have leaf stuck, the leaf grows but doesn't unfold. It's said that
overfertilizing is the reason. This was a Basjoo of mine.

Ron, nice to see you post again! Yours is different problem....nice pic. Mine are unfurling but the leafs before have no stem...growing out on top of each other with not much room to unfurl. It almost looks like 6 leafs coming out of one leaf. They should be growing upward. I only fertilized once this year but this started before that.
Gotta run but will try to post pics.
