Hi Patty. Somewhere in the past I have heard people talking about a "bunchy top disease" in bananas and cannas. Don't know what it is, but looking at the pics and hearing the stories, these certainly qualify. It certainly looks like the stems just arent growing out.. Good luck with this one!

Thanks Parid, looks like Ron's pic showed the same problem you had with the 'cigars' glued.
Off to post pics.

well for some reason Photobucket won't let me C&P pics of the plants I took today. Been on here for over 2 hours D loading pics & trying to get them on. They changed their format & for some reason, I can't use it. I feel like crying....I have good pics too.
It won't let me C&P the pics I uploaded there. Don't know what else to say except... boo hoo. But, it does show about 5-6 leaves coming out within a inch of @ other. They are unfurling but all in one bunch.

Here is a pic of what mine are doing. The cigars are unfurling but the previous leaves aren't fully out yet. In some cases I have to pull outter leaves down. When I do that, water pours out of the plant. None of the plants are fertilized during the winter months inside until the last month or so before going back outside so maybe what Ron said about fertilizer factors into this also? So far this problem hasn't caused any damage as they all go back into the ground and it all works itself out.

Patti... on photobucket I copied the code that said 'direct link' and then I clicked on insert image on here and pasted.

What I have run into a couple of times is if the leaves aren't "popped open" in time, the new leaf will grow up inside and catch the furl of the previous leaf causing the whole shebango to get stuck and require cutting open. However, this has only happened when I have had to bend a growing cigar over to accomodate the ever lowering ceiling. I am running out of vertical space rapidly on my sun porch, and am real glad heat is headed our way. Also, dis regard the "bunchy top syndrome" as it is a virus transmitted by a tropical aphid. I did a little research and found it is a real evil thing that has been attacking some plantations in Hawaii, resulting in some REAL sick looking plants, and highly doubt it would affect us who live in isolated, temperate areas. I think all of our problems will be solved as soon as we can get our babies out side!

Thanks Deb, that's a good pic of what mine are doing. TT has 5 leaves in one bunch - none being all the way out. DM has 6 in a bunch so I did a Deb....pulled older leaves down LOL.
I tried photobucket again...I highlite the IMG (like always) & go to edit but 'copy' won't highlite so I can't click on it. Right clicking on IMG won't do it. I click on the message & try to paste but that isn't highlited either. 'Direct link' won't do anything...maybe it's my puter.
I guess they just need warm weather & real sunshine

It worked! yaaay! Must have been a glich on photobucket.

Yup those leaves sure look familiar! I had two that was getting so bad that the inner leaves were staying a light green and those are the ones that I first started ripping at and the water poured out of them and once I freed up the inner leaves they turned dark green and became sturdy within a day. It's such a struggle to get through winter inside!

My Mini Sdc did that too in the fall. I think they tend to do that whenever they aren't totally happy in their growing conditions. It turned out the bloom was trying to come out in mine. How old is yours? Maybe you should take a good look inside and see if something is trying to come out? my mini bloomed at 3 yrs.

Good point Sandy! I have them outside for last few days so the conditions are better. Maybe they are both trying to flower??? WooHoo, they are both 4 years old so maybe I could cut some leaves away & check what's in there.
Wouldn't 2 more flowers be great?!!
I just now pulled leaves down on both.
