First time happening? Weird for sure, not an expert I came to this blog to learn but I heard some plants do this as a defense mechanism against dehydration or sun damage. What happened later? are the leaves still like it?

A couple of reasons.

First of all....it is not my mat. It is my neighbor's.
Secondly, thick mats create their own micro climate ie, they hold more heat. In colder zones, this is more important to fruit production than a thinned out mat.

I do rob the pups every now and then.

Spider Mites have once again hit my dwarf banana tree. I have had the tree almost 2 years. The poor thing came to me almost dead, my husband got it for me as a mothers day gift. I have given it alot of TLC. the first time the mites hit the tree it started to grow some young starters. We treaded them and all the plants we had together, everyone lived thru the first round of mites. Several months later they hit again this time the mites killed the main trunk and the young starts that where just started growing and all the other plants we had.Since the main tree has died I now have 3 very strong trees and the mites have hit again. I caught sight of them this time before the mites spread to the other plants. Im at a loss as to what i should do this time around. I have hosed the under the leaves of each tree and have rubbed rubbing alcohol on the under side of the leaves and have removed all the dead leaves. I dont want to lose any of the trees I have now. Everyone who sees the trees loves how it looks and I do enjoy taking care of it.Its been growing it in aquaponic garden and it loves being in the system. I have since removed it away from all the other plants we have in the same system.
