Keep banana plant from falling over. Help!

I have a banana plant that's leaning on my fence. Without the fence, it would have fallen over completely.

I thought about just using a 2x4 (or several) to support it, but I'm not sure if attaching it with nails is a good idea. Does anyone have any advice on this? Images would help.

Also, this plant is in the middle of a bunch of others.

Thanks!

take a 10 foot pole or piece of rebar and hammer into the ground then use it like a anchor tie the plant up to the pole.or take a 2x4 put a piece of carpet around the banana plant and let the 2x4 press up on the plant where the carpet will protect it.

Or just cut the pstem in half its height, dig it and replant it somewhere else... I wouldn't use nails on a plant...

Thanks JP and Kubali for your quick replies!

When I went out to take the pictures, I just noticed is starting to produce bananas.

I might try the rebar idea and tie it up. The wind here can be nasty right now.

Out of curiosity, if I did dig it up and since its starting to produce bananas, do you think it would stress the plant out too much if I did that?

yes, it might result in poor quality fruit from too much stress to the plant.
I would stick with what I told you works fine for me. and we get some wicked out flow winds here in Florida as you know from the thunder storms and I do mean wicked 50-60 mph.

In that case, support it or tie the pstem together. I've seen it work before...

yeah it's ok, I was born and raised in Sarasota fl but it got too crowded there so I came here to build my mom and dad a house and got my feet stuck here.

I just saw what you do for work and wanted to say my son's class just won a award for best short film they made in high school and he is main editor and runs a steady cam for 2 years now.

One way we use-a hard wood post with a point on the end which is positioned just under the bunch. All things being equal, the weight of the bunch leaning will enable the pointed end to go into the stem far enough to keep the post in place. Position the post's point a little way directly under the bunch. Sorry I have no photo.

Congrats to him! I've been in "the biz" forever, but over the next 5-7 years I'll be transitioning out. But probably not entirely. Best advice I can think of for your son is to learn and do as much as possible to hone the craft. I liked living in Lakeland because I would work in Orlando and Tampa and could be in either place within an hour.

Thanks again for your help!

Re: Keep banana plant from falling over. Help!

I know its a bit late in reply, but just had a similar problem and this is what I came up with /did and so far so gesood. Will adjust as need as flower stem continues to deploy. We hammered a 6 ft rebar next to her, used a pulley strap to hold her to the rebar and made like a 2inch pvc scaffolding wedged to cinder block. So far so good, has not swayed. Posting here hoping if someone else needs help it will help them come up with something or someone can give me better idea etc.....

Very cool! Thanks for the image. This helps. I did the rebar solution myself and tied 'er up using parachute cord. Working well for now. I like your PVC integration too...cheap and effective.

Re: Keep banana plant from falling over. Help!

Over next three days that I am finally off with nothing to do, might revamp it a bit with other pvc parts I have to see if I can come up with something that will support itself and banana plant from all sides. Will post pics here if I do come up with anything interesting.
