Default Insects

Hey there,

I have about 2000 banana and plantain trees here in Mali Africa, information is hard to get. So I am turning to the experts here to see if you can help me with an insect problem which is getting worse by the day.

There are little black bugs eating my trees, the top turns brown and the tree falls over prematurely. Specially the plaintains.
I have searched the net, the insects look like stem borers but they are different.
I am not yet using any pesticides but might have to change that policy. However, there are only a few pesticides available here, mainly for tomato and rice.
Can anybody identify this bug and tel me how to get rid of them?

Thanks

Casper

1) The pesticides are likely broad-base and should work for your bananas too. Since these are for tomatoes, then the pesticides should not effect eating the banana fruit. Follow the instructions for application. You could test the pesticides by catching a few bug in a jar then apply a small bit of pesticide mist.

2) If the bugs are borers, then the pesticides may not be able to kill those that are buried into the pstem; or under the leaf sheaf. Repeated applications of a pesticide may be required. But spraying will help to reduce the bug population and to keep them from spreading to unaffected plants.

3) You need local help to identify the bugs and recommend a ratification program and pesticides to use. Catch some of the bugs in a bottle and take to your Agricultural Agent for identification and his recommendations.

4) You need to act quickly because 2000 banana plants is a substantial amount of money and income.

Casper - I'm guessing that you don't have a local ag agent in Africa but do have internet access- Those little black bugs may be thrips - just a guess but pics and on line descriptions appear similar.
