Help on my gros michel and ice cream
Hello, all. I am new to the Musa hustle and am wondering about a couple of my trees. I hope I've done the images correctly, but I uploaded some photos of my two trees to my gallery. I am wondering if the red colors on the base of the gros michel and on its sheaths are healthy. Also, I am wondering if the reddish colors on the ice cream tree look normal too. I am in zone 10b in south florida. I water my trees daily, unless it rains. I fertilize lightly once per week before I water. I hope someone can help. Thanks!

Re: Help on my gros michel and ice cream
Nice looking plants. The red coloring and 'wine' stains on the leaves are normal for young plants.

Re: Help on my gros michel and ice cream
Your "ice cream" is a Namwah and your Gros Michel is what it is and both look very good.

Re: Help on my gros michel and ice cream
As Steve said the ice cream is a tall namwa and the GM is correct. Both look healthy and normal.

Re: Help on my gros michel and ice cream
Oh, no! I guess I have been duped somehow. Thanks for letting me know. How should I go about telling the nursery they made a mistake?

Re: Help on my gros michel and ice cream

Re: Help on my gros michel and ice cream
I'm new to the site. Would that be against posting rule? Also, I just wrote to the nursery. I am hoping there was some mistake on their end and that it was not intentional. I will update this thread when I hear from them. Finally, although I did not order a Nam Wah, it seems to be a really cool variety at least.

Re: Help on my gros michel and ice cream
It may not be completely the nursery's fault. Their wholesale supplier may have mislabeled the plants. Or the nursery is growing out mislabeled TC's from ArgiStarts.
Anyway by naming the nursery, will let the forum memebers know to be careful of their orders. |

Re: Help on my gros michel and ice cream
I see your point. I heard back from them and they repeated that it is "just young" but indeed a blue java, as they see it. So perhaps the supplier messed up. I reiterated my concerns that other people have told me it is definitely not a blue java and I am still waiting on their reply. Before I mention the nursery name, I want to see how this plays out and whether they ignore me or actually provide useful information.

Re: Help on my gros michel and ice cream
I'd cut away right now (deleaf) the lowest six leaves on the GM, but then that's me!
I seem to see a few thrips scars on the stem/frond base. Maybe some preventive insecticide would be useful Nice looking plants Last edited by louis14 : 07-27-2018 at 07:38 AM. |

Re: Help on my gros michel and ice cream
They are still green and feeding the corm, why cut them off?

Re: Help on my gros michel and ice cream
The corm is already an incredible power bank for a plant this size. Deleafing less healthy and aging leaves will lower risks of parasites and disease setting onto the healthy plant but also wake up the plant into growing new leaves faster to compensate. A Banana plant is a herb, your lawn is a herb and does not suffer when you cut it. Consider it like a genetically designed response to grazing. We currently deleaf all our banana plants to three leaves for the first six to eight months after transplant, but then we want to force them to grow faster. I have a topic about this and K. Namwa. Our K. Namwa and our GM currently grow a new leaf every five to seven days but then it's the rainy season but we still feed them via folear spray every two weeks.

Re: Help on my gros michel and ice cream
Ok so here is my update. I wrote to them two days ago and have not heard back since. The last thing they said was that they assured me it was an ice cream banana tree. I mentioned how various members of a site I belong to claim otherwise, and asked if they would please explain why there might be these differing opinions, and also if they could clarify the differences between a young namwah and a young ice cream. Finally, I even suggested that perhaps their supplier made an error. I hoped that might allow the nursery to feel I wasn't pointing the finger at them and have them save face.
Anyway, the nursery is Sow Exotic in Winter Haven, Florida. To be clear, my goal isn't to have members here look badly on this nursery, but rather to have members here be aware of the possibility of mislabeling. Moreover, being that namwah is a very desirable variety, I'm not even compelled to ask for a refund, and the tree is doing very well. I will just be more careful next time and probably look elsewhere. Thanks to everyone on bananas.org who have assisted me in my questions. I feel welcomed here as a new member and look forward to continuing posts and learning with the community. |

Re: Help on my gros michel and ice cream
Send them one of the pictures and tell them Blue Java (aka: Ice Cream) does not have pink/redish mid ribs and leaf edges. Then may be they will correct the label and get the right plant from their supplier.
