Gran nain
 

I received my gran nain about 2 weeks ago and it doesn't look like its going to make it. First I had placed in the ground but it had been raining alot. So I took it out and put it on a pot. The soil consists compost, gypsum (very little) and miracle grow garden soil. I have liquid fed some root stimulator. I had cut back the leaf, it had turn brown. It's not looking so good.

I water every 3 days or so. At first it was in the direct sun from noon to 8 pm. On Saturday I placed under the shade, only gets direct sun light for about 2 or less hours

That soil sure looks dry in the pic. If it were my nana I would carefully remove the dead top- layer by layer with a sharp blade til the green cigar leaf is exposed an inch or two.
Your pup needs time to recover from the shock. Don't fertilize anymore til you have new leaves. Keep in shady location and let it adjust. When you put it back in ground use plenty of Black cow.

I learned the hard way to never pot anything using MG garden soil. MG POTTING mix won't dampen off new plantings with some pearlite to help drainage. If the pot feels heavy don't water until it feels lighter. Super thrive soak before potting is a good way to stimulate growth.

thanks for the advice. I have been cutting all the dead the stuff. Compared how it came I have cut a lot :ha:

don't know if this applies to your area - an avacado grower around san antonio told me his water is high in minerals and builds up salts in the ground when irrigated? Probably why you are using gypsum in planting?
I really don't know what gypsumdoes?
Anyway - if your water is in question the stuff in the grocery store is pretty cheap while you are potting the G. nain
BTW - I have unintentionally killed nanas in pots by overwatering in winter - but never in the heat of the summer.

Yeah that's the reason I use gypsum. If you drink tap water, you can actually taste the minerals. And my avocado is doing a lot more better when I amended the soil with gypsum. Funny thing is I can't find gypsum here in the valley, but when I go to San Antonio I buy 5 or so bags.

Today, I cut the all brown on it and placed it inside next to the window. Tomorrow I will get some perlite.

Update... It's getting worse. I placed it in the shade with enough water. Now most of the trunk is turning brownish color. Oh well, I have to start from with another one. I Am Not GIVING UP!!

Sal - Something is wrong - it should have put on new cigar leaves by now if it likes the new home. Reviewing the post you, you placed it inside - not the same as in shade.

on 7/28 you said - Was it shipped to you o? Other than rain and leaves turned brown was there a reason for potting it? What did you use when you 1st planted in ground? It is common for nanas shipped in a box to take awhile to recover.
I’m not much on potting nanas in warm climates – If you think the pup is dying and is not going to make it. I suggest you un pot it. Carefully examine the corm. Look for soft areas , does it have roots… better yet post a picture of the plant and corm. Wrap the corm in moist newspaper put in a cool place out of sun (maybe a patio) while you wait for responses.
If it is viable, I would plant it in ground in a well prepared bed that will receive good sun AND protect from direct sun until it has a chance to recover. I live in S. Mississippi – our soil is well drained, sandy loam and I don’t have problems with salt build-up with irrigation. Around here, I would make the bed using 3 bags of Black Cow mixed with local soil, maybe some peat, water in heavily, and mulch with oak leaves, grass clippings, or pine straw. Water daily for a week or two. No fert til new leave appear.
With your soil and local water, you might do better buying cheap water in gallons at WalMart.
Others might disagree - Maybe, a member from your area can advise better on planting nanas in S. Texas.

Yes it was shipped to me from Florida hill nursery. I planted with compost, native soil ( heavy clay soil), gypsum and mg garden soil. I also water it with root stimulator for the first 2 weeks, once a week and ever 3rd day with regular water.

At first the leaves started to curl in and turn brown at the same time. I start cutting off the brown. Since it started rain pretty heavily the first week I plant it, I moved it to a pot since was being drowned.

I have uploaded pics of the roots but for some reason(iPhone) I can't place on the thread. I will link them later. I will place the plant on some moist newspapers and place it inside the house. I don't have a well shaded patio.

Sal ---- give the naner a break!

Pot in pic is too big.
Miracle Grow potting mix with a good amount of pearlite. Save the gypsum for now.
Since the naner is in ER mode now use a new clay pot - unglazed - it has to breathe.
Water once and lift the pot to get a feel for the weight.
Do not water again until it feels significantly lighter.
Put it back in direct south facing sunlight, outdoors in the heat, but where it can not get rained on.
And use that MG garden soil only for in ground planting.

This thing ain't a friggin begonia!!!

I can't but other people can. I think its my soil mix... :^)
