Default Dying Ensete - roots gone, pests? Help!

First time poster. I have a mature Ensete ventricosum 'Maurelii' plant, that was thriving in a planter (outdoor), and last year i've moved into the ground. It was doing fine for a while, but started getting smaller and smaller and smaller. Possibly started with too much moisture in the soil with the crazy rains in the winter in socal. It's been dry for months, and I've tried adjusting water schedule and fertilizer with no luck.

I decided to dig it up and move it to a planter, and it looks like there's no roots left. Pictures below. I'm hoping to save it, but i can't even tell what's afflicting the plant.

i decided to start cutting some of the corm that looked damaged and turned out most of it was rotten. There was maybe only 1/2" of good corm left under the main stem. I will try to plant what's left in a pearlite heavy potting mix and see what happens.

I’m by no means a banana expert, but I’ve dealt with my fair share of rodents and those droppings remind me a lot of rats. Feces of omnivores is typically not great for compost. Could be wrong though, I’m totally new to all of this.

I perfectly understand you. Rodents are the real problem for those who put in a garden. Last year I put potatoes, and in summer I discovered a lot of potatoes were eaten by field mice. I was furious at them. Recently, I had another problem, and that problem was with squirrels who damaged the wires in my house. I love animals, and I have a cat and a dog, but I will not tolerate rodents that harm it. So, I thought about contacting squirrel removal services. I don't want to kill it, and I will catch it and then set it free.
