brown patches on the leaves - sun?
Hi
I have a small basjoo and I kept it in a pot during the winter. The last few days it stayed outdoors 24 hours and it was fine. Now that the temperature has gone up to 25 C I decided that it's time to put it in the ground. I did so two days ago. Yesterday it looked fine but today I noticed brown patches on the leaves, including the new leaf that's coming through at the top. It has been watered. Could it be the sun? It receives full sunlight now, while before the pot was in the shade. I am thinking of covering it with some sort of thin screen and introduce it to the sun gradually, I just hope it's not too late. What do you think? Thanks a lot |

Re: brown patches on the leaves - sun?
Transplanting shock does not always happen, but is nothing unusual. What I have so far not
observed is, that it also affects the emerging leaves. Try to provide some shade though, at least for a week or two. It is unlikely, whatever it is, that it has affected the corm, since it has just happened in a short time. And if you have a sound corm, you have the makings of a healthy plant and yours will almost certainly recover. Good luck, Olaf

Re: brown patches on the leaves - sun?
Could it be fertilizer burn? I added slow release fertilizer in the soil I put around it. What do I do in this case?

Re: brown patches on the leaves - sun?
Usually adding fertilizer directly after transplanting anything is not a good idea, unless it is
something really mild, such as bone meal or blood meal. That can be mixed right into the soil you fill around the roots. You should wait at least a couple of weeks before applying stronger stuff. If you still have some left on the surface, scrape it up and set it aside in a bucket to be re-used in a couple of weeks. If you get some soil with that scraping, that is alright too, since you will just put it back, when the time comes. Good luck again, Olaf

Re: brown patches on the leaves - sun?
Argh, I'm so frustrated. I'm sure I put too much Miracle Gro in the soil. It wasn't a solution, it was in dry form and I mixed it into the soil. It's slow release and it releases nutrients for months. So I guess my only option now is to remove the soil from around the plant and put new, without the fertiliser. That will be a second shock for the little tree within just 5 days. I hope it will survive
Thank you very much Olaf |

Re: brown patches on the leaves - sun?
Do not remove the plant completely, so that the exposure to light direction does not change
again. Remove as much of the soil as you can and replace it with neutral soil. I presume, that you left some of the soil in place, which surrounded the roots in the pot. That soil is not over-fertilized. So leave it there. Even though the remaining fertilizer is 'slow release', you may try to flush it out with lots of water. Keep in mind, that fertilizer is not poison, just right now premature and you may well be able to use the fertilized soil elsewhere or mix it into your compost, where at least the nitrogen helps with the decomposition. I often toss a handful of nitrogen on compost which will be used several months down the road. Best, Olaf

Re: brown patches on the leaves - sun?
Thank you Olaf. You seem very knowledgeable about bananas. I'm a novice as you can probably tell. I thought I'd have an easy job with the Greek weather on my side but I underestimated the difficulties.
Indeed I had not removed the old pot soil. I removed much of the new soil today and replaced it with neutral soil. I could not remove all of it unfortunately as some of it was placed directly under the banana. She seems to be worse today, and the brown patches have expanded. I have uploaded an image hereBanana Gallery - unhappy little basjoo: It's funny how one of the leaves has got those small spots that look like freckles caused by the sun. Our skin and plant's skin seem to have similar reactions to the sun |

Re: brown patches on the leaves - sun?
I wouldn't remove all the soil. Too much shock. Just flush heavily with water amd your plant will deal as it starts growing quickly. Be careful with fertilizer during transplant or winter. Your plant is adapting to the full sun, it will be fine in 2 weeks.

Re: brown patches on the leaves - sun?
Indeed it has! It's getting big now although not as quickly as people said. It looks healthy and happy though. Thanks
