Pinwheel Broken Plant - Pups?

Once the summer finally came to the Chicago area I moved my 1 year old plants outside. Over the next few days there were several storms and one of my plants bent in half. I decided to move them back in doors. Had to cut the bent plant and within a few days was happy to discover a new leaf came out of the cut off portion stem of the plant.

That was a month ago... In the past week I've seen several shoots (pups?) coming from the base of the plant. Are these Pups? How many should there be? How/When do I attempt to separate them from the mother?

Help Please!

Default Re: Broken Plant - Pups?

Good to hear that bent stem was not a complete loss, the negative news is that going into winter these smaller ones will be harder to maintain than one 2'+ and maybe should stay connected to the mother corm.

Do you know what type of banana plant it is? Many bananas pup when they want to and many different bananas "pup" more than others... My basjoo has already started sprouting 5 more pups one week after I separated 11 from its mother; and my maurelii has had No puppies this year. My Williams is Slowly pushing 1 pup but might have several peepers hiding beneath the soil? Stress to the mothers p-stem and leafage does seem to encourage root and pup growth.

I think I am finding out there are also many other stress-factors that will cause a banana to pup also... That being said, fertilizer, warmth and light is a must for optimum growth.

The 1st thing (around here) that effects plants that go outside is wind if you don't have a fan on them and then it still effects them, but not as much.. :^)
