Cold Bringing corms out of storage.

i overwintered some basjoo's in the basement of my parents house to test that process and am confused about how to bring them out. should i just plant them in the ground and let them sit till i see some leaves, should i pot them up in potting soil till i see them sprout then plant them out. or is there another method to bringing them back to life?

i have searched on here for other threads similar to this, but i did not find any specific to bringing them out, if you know of one, a link would do fine, thank you.

Alrighty this can get tricky now!!!

You need to stick them in the ground AND....... Water them!!!
Really though, I have never had problems doing just that..

Depends on where you live....if you live in Florida you can just throw them in the ground. If you live in a more northern climate you might want to put them in a pot first and get them growing before you put them in the ground. That way if a freeze or cold spell hits you can easily move them inside. I just potted up a 12 foot ice cream today and plan on trying to move it when it gets cold and just plant it in the ground in about a month or so....hope that helps

Well, if you were to stick them in pots just in case of a cold snap, what would have been the point of storing them dormant in the first place.. Its better to just wait till you know the danger of frost has passed.

You know, then just stick them in the ground and water...

The growing season isn't that long up here. You have to get them growing asap. If I waited until the last chance of frost then planted outside I might not see any growth till almost june. Plus my ensete wasn't looking to good so I had no choice but to pot it up and make it start growing. If you want to get a jump on the growing season and have room then why wouldn't you want to pot them up and get them going early? Its kinda crazy some of the stuff people do to get bananas to grow up here...lol

I would know, I have lived up north, and grown bananas there....
But still, what would be the point....... Why store them at all if thats how your going to do it....
If its about space in the house or whatever, well than, 2 weeks for a cold snap or two months+ for winter, they stll take up the same amount of space....
It would be better to store then put right into the ground, or keep in pots full time...

Some of the smaller bananas were not stored dormant I stuck them in a south facing window in my spare bedroom and they did great. I only stored 2 of my huge bananas dormant. If I had room I wouldve potted them up when I dug them up as well. They have been dormant for basically 4.5 months. In a normal winter I wouldve kept them down there for another month or so but it has been really nice. Don't really know why you don't understand the purpose of potting them up. If I planted my ice cream now then a freeze hit I would be screwed....but since I potted it I can pull it into my garage out of the frost and cold. By potting it up and waking it up earlier I will hopefully get another 2 to 3 foot of growth compared to waiting till the normal last frost date...

thanks for the replies guys. i just potted them up so i dont trample on them in the yard and to bring them in if it gets too cold till the good (too hot) weather hits :/ i doubt that this year.

i really only pot the smallest ones up over winter and grow them inside. Luckily we have a sun room that is quite nice over winter, gets to about 60 degree's sometimes, but im not worried.

i mainly did this to test out the process of overwintering a large banana for future reference with more expensive, more loved banana's than the basjoo. i dont have too much room to have a 4-5 foot banana tree in the house, so if its over that i really have to hack it up and store it.

I cut down my big guy late last fall, pulled it out of the pot and hid it in a black trash bag in the basement all winter. But its been C R A Z Y warm for the last week or 2 - DC Cherry Blossom festival has kicked into gear weeks early - all the plants in our yard are 3-4 weeks ahead of the usual schedule.
So, I took my big pot from last year, put some bluestone gravel in the bottom, and a piece of pot shard to shield the overflow pipe, dropped that big 'ol root ball in on the gravel, filled around it with potting oil, and gave it a big old drink ... and left it outside for the SUN ...

The cut stalk is about 3.5 foot tall, the root ball is huge - maybe 2.5 foot across - with fresh whispy roots sprouting already!

Its almost 10PM and its still 71 degrees outside - MARCH 22!!

Pictures tomorrow when I get a chance!

yeah, i noticed the ones i cleaned up for my mom to plant back in the yard actually started growing faster than the ones i put in pots in some compost. i probably shouldnt put them in compost in pots, but have nothing else, and dont really want to buy some potting soil just to pot them up for a month.

i took the largest ones that didnt start sprouting out after a week and a half and let them sit in the shade till they start kinda greening up and look like they are ready to grow... otherwise i feel like they just decompose in the soil/pots, and dont really want that to happen.

also, if the main stem is turning mushy and brown, is this a fungal infection or some kind of disease, only to die eventually? i try and remove it to some green inner leaves, but it still has not seemed to survive.

After much rain this weekend, we got some sun Sunday so I went out and got a picture of the repotted banana corm ...
Do I need to cut it back/shorter or can it recover from this ??
The root ball has tons of white whisker roots starting to grow!

(Once I know its doing ok, I'll put some more potting soil in the pot.)

Lifted the pot, put it on a hand truck and rolled it in for the night - they are calling for a freeze - so everything that can come in, did come in!! Ow, my shoulder!
