New Thai Handbook - 'Kluay'

The handbook has a nice glossy cover.

As far as the contents are concerned, it is profusely illustrated with color pix of the various Thai cultivars with English names. Note: Kluay Neu Cherekeh aka the Crocodile Fingers shown on the left page.

Hey people, guess what I found at the book store in Thailand a few days ago?
A nice little handbook with the title 'Kluay - Banana'.

Some details;

Size : ( 9 x 5.25 )in

Pages : 112 glossy pages in full color

Content;
It starts with the normal intro on the uses, culture and stuff (as if I can read Thai!) and has the brief photographic description of approx 67 cultivars and a few species.

Brief Comments;
It is a well put together book with nice pictorial layout. On top of that it shows the pix of quite a few of the lesser known Thai cultivars such as Kluay Nam Wah Dam, Kluay Hom Thip Nakhon Sawan, etc. There are also close up shots of the fruits.
The only drawback is that it's all in Thai except for the 'naner names. However, it makes a nice photo ref book with the English cultivar names.

Price : 150 Thai Baht

C'mon, as if any body ever reads Playboy/Penthouse/Playgirl mags :ha:

Currently 150b = us$4.40.

I will send you one as a token of appreciation for your sds. But you have to wait till end of the month when I haul ass there. Can't send you mine cos I have notes written all over it like a cross word puzzle! It's a nice book to have around considering many of the pix are fruits of the lesser known Thai cultivars.

That's cool, Tog! I bought a palms and cycads of Thailand book while I was there, even though the scientific names were the only things I could read. I was kicking myself for not buying another book on bananas there, because it had a picture of a green-flowered Ensete superbum! That looks like 'Burmese Blue' on the cover of that one, no? I'd love to buy one of those from you, Tog.

Ok guys, I will pick up a copy each for y'all when I get there. Look, I don't sell this book and I won't get rich selling it, so I will let you know the actual exchange rate cost + postage. Good, yappy?
This book's much better than the one which came out 10 yrs ago, it was all in Thai. At least this one has English for the names. Nice novelty to have around making your peers think you can understand Thai. Maybe you can mumble some gibberish to simulate Thai to impress them if questions are asked. Good suggestion? Though I am not the author but since I am the first bloke to introduce the book to the West, I will autograph it for ya. :ha:

You pay more for Playboy and some folks says, it can have adverse effects like going blind.

Gad, the braille must be in really big raised bumps and hairy depressions. Can't imagine your heart beat and pulse rate when you get to those sentences....

Seriously Ante, how did you read my mind?

I am thinking of doing a Banana Enthusiast Handbook on the Cultivars of Malaysia and Thailand with the species thrown in. It will take a while for me to get all the pix and traveling required. When I actually do it, you will be the 1st one to get a copy! :ha:

No idea guys, it's not a heavy book, and like I said earlier I am not making anything out of this, you pay whatever at the cost and at the xchange rate. All you owe me is a cup of cappucino! :ha:

I just hope the customs won't charge me for the number of books I am bringing. They are bloody cranky over here.

Will do Andrew. I grab a bunch when I go there early next month. Just hope they have enough to go around otherwise, as a 1st come 1st served basis, I will get them every month as I go there.
