I haven't read his book but I heard the interview by Angelie Gross. That's abut 39 minutes and I was not able upload here. Dan Koeppel mentioned that the best tasting banana for him is Lakatan from the Philippines. Well, I have not tasted many bananas as Dan did but I can agree that Lakatan from the Philippines is very good. So, members, you may plant this...
But the part of the interview that put some question on his independence in this book is when he mentioned that he agree on genetic manipulation of banana. He reasoned out that since banana does not produce seeds the fear of contaminationg the environment is not an issue anymore or something to this effect. However, I think Dan should read first the bad effects of GMO before supporting it. Like this, GM Crops threaten world food production, why are they still allowed? - Yahoo! UK & Ireland Answers and this... GM-FREEIRELAND : FORGING A GM POLICY FOR IRELAND WORKSHOP. GMO has a very dangerous effect to environment. Enjoy reading the two links if you can. Honestly, I was disgusted when I read those two links. ![]() |

I can't believe I had forgotten about this post but, I had only been here a few months and hadn't learned all I know now. Thanks for the bump BananaAddict
What a difference a year makes. For me I think Koeppels book should be required reading at least for the non scientists among us. I found it thoroughly entertaining and educational as well. The first few chapters worth the price of the book itself. No I never met him or have any agenda other than for "regular " folks here to learn a lot in as little time as possible. Mitchel I throw every peel in the compost and haven't had any issues yet. The only thing I really don't compost is old tomato vines as all sorts of blights are pretty much endemic here. Even so this was a particulary bad year (even making the news) for late blight and I never got it. I think because I've eliminated overhead watering altogether and use a straw muclh preventing soil from splashing up on to the plants even during the heaviest rains. |

Absolutely. Before I started with bannas last year I was a freak about crop rotation. Not even planting tomatoes where potatoes or egplant were even 2 years before. Get your hands on Elliot colemans "Four Season Harvest" or "The New Organic Grower" (geared to larger farms). I think you would like them even if your seasons aren't as dramatic as here or the author's in Maine.

I still have a tomato plant growing from last year! Just to rub in a little
It's not pretty but still growing fruit! The hot pepper plant that came with the house continued to grow with no water, food or care of any kind for 5 years before I removed it and who knows how long it was there before we moved in. Strange things those seasons! ![]() |
