Using Banana Pseudostem as Planter
Here is a possible use for the pseudostem after it fruits instead of chopping it into the compost pile. Easy Homestead: Waste Banana Plant Trunk as Planter |

Re: Using Banana Pseudostem as Planter
Looks like a great idea, but I'd personally rather the stems go back into feeding my bananas.

Re: Using Banana Pseudostem as Planter
Looks cool. You could building a growing fence with them.
Illia mentioned putting them back to use for more bananas-composting, I guess- but it's hard to capture much of the nutrients without a sealed digester system. I have heard of such, and they make alcohol as well, but I can't find a link to it. My family is feeding "expired" p-stems to our pigs, and they will eat all we give them. It's about half their diet by calories, so it's saving big bucks. The trick is to slice the p-stems about an eigth inch thick. That lets them digest it without stomach problems. It's a lot of work when your feeding 30 pigs, so I've got an automated slicer in the works. Kind of like a huge deli slicer, but the blade moves instead of the balony/p-stem. It sits at an angle so the p-stem slides down by gravity after each cut. If any one is interested I'll share the design. Thanks for the pic and idea, Country. |

Re: Using Banana Pseudostem as Planter
Personally don't think it's a good idea, mainly because transplanting later will be more stressful and difficult than if a pot or a compostable pot was used.
Really liked the idea that bamboo was used for the support. I believe as much of the plant should go back into the soil as Illia wrote. Quote:
