How much would you pay for a stalk of bananas?
Anyone know what the going rate for a stalk of bananas or plantains is? I suppose it depends on the number of fruits in the stalk, but maybe someone has an idea.

In Ecuador? $1 - $2 for sweet bananas of most types, $3 for Gros Michels, and $4-$6 for most plantains, depending on the season and plantain type.

Re: How much would you pay for a stalk of bananas?
About US$3 for a big stalk of ripe sweet bananas including reds. Don't know about green ones or plantains, but the retail price of bananas here has nearly doubled over the last year. UPS/EPS won't accept fruit or plant material for carriage to the USA.

Re: How much would you pay for a stalk of bananas?
After 9 months of harvesting I have found the approximate Florida prices for a stalk of bananas.
A 30-40 lbs stalk of NamWahs/Ice Cream/Mysore is worth $21 A typical stalk of Platano Burro is worth about $5 Plantains can be sold for $7-$10 If you put them in a box you can get more money. |
Re: How much would you pay for a stalk of bananas?
Nick, my hat is off to you if you can actually make a profit selling your bananas for those prices. It wouldn't surprise me if we pay more just for the water to grow a bunch here in California than you make selling one.

The water is essentially free for me. The drainage district lets water in when it's dry and pumps water out when it is wet. I want to say It costs about $25/acre per year.

Nick,
what is the $25 per acre, fertiliser, labor? |

The $25/acre is the assessment paid to the drainage district to maintain a certain water table. It pays a guy to turn a pump on when the water level is too high, open the flood gate when the water is too low, keep the canals free of weeds, and occasionally rent a backhoe to clean the silt out of the canals. It also pays for maintenance and operation on all the flood control structures. There are about 4000 acres in the drainage district. I think I probably spend about $250/acre/yr on fertilizer. I am the labor, and on average I probably spend about 10hrs week at the farm. |

Paid 70 cents for these beauties in Chiang Mai, Thailand.
But generally they sell by the box in developed countries, no? Quote:
