Banana Plants May Be Used In Production Of Plastic Products :woohoonaner: |
Re: Banana plastic! WOW!
Wow ! I think that this is a pretty cool way to use the banana leftovers. although banana boatis the first thing that popped into my mind instead of banana sandwich ! LOL
Anything that helps out the banana farmers and their local economy has to be a good thing. Thanks for sharing this article ! Chris |
Re: Banana plastic! WOW!
I was expecting the article to be about the latex in bananas, bit of a surprise it wasn't. Can you imagine the giant heaps of compost in those ravines that they have been dumping the spent banana plants in for all these years? Wow, I'd like to have some of that, minus the poisons that are surely sprayed on the plants that is.

Re: Banana plastic! WOW!
at first blush, this seems to be about the linear fiber in the pseudostem and leaves having very good strength...if you ever wonder about those long strands of fiber, try to mow old leaves on your turf...and how often they'll stop your mower...

Re: Banana plastic! WOW!
Can't understand why they use the word "Waste". Are all the leaves that
fall of trees "Waste".? It's just another thing they steal from nature and probably they aren't able to give it back. Let's hope that at least the product will be recyclable, if not, then they can speak of "Waste". Ron |
Re: Banana plastic! WOW!
I'd say that composting, vermicomposting and burning into ashes are the best ways to go. We need to eat healthy food - therefore we need to fertilize more naturally - therefore it's waste to use it for plastic materials, isn't it?

Re: Banana plastic! WOW!
I'm afraid it forces me to play the devil's advocate, as well. The Polynesian islands were nearly or utterly destroyed by leaching minerals from the soil for industries. And "waste" is the fuel for new plants to grow on. In addition, I'm just a tad opposed to plastics. They tend to find their way to oceans and poison fish that try to eat them. Mercury's a big enough problem already and I love seafood, lol.

But back to the topic: There's one system in this world, that I found truly amazing and that should be implemented all over the world. It's the model created and for decades practised in the Brazilian city called Curitiba... There are others, but this city is considered the ecological top of what city can become.
