I am out of seeds. There are no more. All gone.

Two years ago my wife and I visited the Caribbean lowlands of south eastern Costa Rica. While there we went to a great organic fruit farm and saw some very slick black textile bananas. If you did not click the link here are the pictures:







They are out of focus, but it was dark in that forest.

Anyway, I never forgot those black banana plants. I emailed the owner and asked for him to ship some seeds if possible. He harvested the fruit dried the seeds and I got them today!!! Nearly 2 years after I had first seen the plants.

I am going to try, but I am not very good at germinating seeds, but would like to give some folks a shot at doing so. PM your address and I can send out 2 dozen seeds or so.

The only thing I ask is that you send me a plant or two to try here in coastal South Carolina if you are fortunate enough to get them to germinate and grow.

I only have a limited number of seeds and would like to keep them in the continental US.

We can update the progress on this thread.

OK. A lot of responses. In order to make sure there were enough seeds to go around, I cut back the number of seeds to 20 from 25 for each person.

I will try to get them out early this week.

The plant is Musa textilis, and it is nice to see that it is a true form of it because everything else sold in the US as M. textilis that I have seen is some strange variety of M. balbisiana.

Just wanted you to know that the seeds arrived in the mail today!!! Most of them were crushed due to them not being protected from the PO sorting machines, but a few of them did arrive in good shape. Hopefully, I will be able to germinate one or two of them and have them grow to look half as nice as yours!!!! Thanks for the gesture. BTW, any tips on getting them to germinate!?!?!?! Any advice would be appreciated...

When I send small seeds, I pad the inside of the envelope with paper towel layers so they don't get crushed in the machines. Oops, sorry for the late advice:)

most were crushed but I have 10 good ones :) I uasually use bubble rap, and papper towels to protect seeds.

Hey, I did the same several years ago when I did the velutina seeds distribution. Live and learn. I was able to salvage 11 seeds out of the 20, so I do have something to try. Again, anyone have any recommendations with getting musa seeds to germinate? I have not had very good success in the past with musa seeds with the exception of my velutina seeds. Sorry, dasycarpus?!?!?!

Well, I hate to "burst" anyone's bubble, but all of mine are intact except one! Thanks again, this should be interesting. Will keep you updated with germination or lack there of. We all know how finicky banana seeds are.

Got mine yesterday... got 12 survivors. I got them going in my setup now... hopefully I will have results in a week or so. My sikkimensis have been popping up within 5-7 days hope it is the same with these

Well I planted mine 1/2in deep, mist the dirt for water, heating pad on the bottem, and I have now built a minature greenhouse inside just for seed sprouting, and I try to keep it at 80F....(47C)....... What about YOU?

I'm from Malaysia and would like to explore if there would be anyone here that can send me some banana seed for my banana trial plot. Currently in Malaysia we cultivate them via transplant or tissue culture, and when it comes for commercial farm it will be more cost effective if we could grow them via seed. Is there anyone here that can send me some seedling so that I could give a try on 1 acre trial plot.

Hi and welcome triple S...If you can wait still March i'll come to Malaysia for a one month trip..So I can bring you some seeds ...But is impossible for you to collect some in the forest?

a guy from a nursery that I know, gave me a method for germinating; after having dipped the seeds slightly , he splits them before potting.He has ensured that he did not need to vary the temperature and it had no fungal problems
