Edible banana's will not have seed's.

www.banana-tree.com and www.seedman.com are two places with good selections of tropical seeds.

Just be aware, the bananas produced will have those seeds in them, so it makes them somewhat difficult to consume for those with edible fruit.

Good question, it interests me too, but I can't find the answer to it anywhere!

ALL bananas are eatable. .... But those that are most desirable and sold commercially to eat are seedless. Bananas with seeds are normally sold as ornamental types.

It's important to understand sexual reproduction.

https://letstalkscience.ca/education...t-reproduction

Edible banana cultivars that are pollinated can produce seeds.

Edible banana cultivars that are not pollinated don't produce seeds.

Think of a supermarket banana like a supermarket egg.

If a supermarket egg is fertilized it can produce a chick.

If a supermarket egg is not fertilized it doesn't produce a chick.

Here's some photos of three common edible banana cultivars that will easily produce seeds if there's a compatible pollen source within a quarter mile.

ABB Blue Java

AAB Manini A'ea'e

AA Veinte Cohol

The two most common edible banana cultivar seeds I see for sale on the internet are Blue Java and Manini A'ea'e seeds. But you should be cautious because even though those seeds are very easy to produce there's no way to be sure the seeds actually originated from those fruit. And even if they did, it's important to realize they will not produce Blue Java or Manini A'ea'e seedlings. Each seed, if it germinates will produce a new variety and you won't know if these new varieties are seedless or seeded until after they bear fruit.

Thanks for the info. Would suck to bite into a banana and crunch on pretty much a piece of buckshot lol

I've bitten into thousands of bananas that I wasn't expecting to be seeded and it's really not a big deal. I would describe it more like biting into an egg sandwich that has a small piece of eggshell left in it.

One of the problems with having fertile male flowers around is that many of your edible banana cultivars will get pollinated naturally and the fruit will have seeds.

One of the nice things about having fertile male flowers around is that you can have a limitless supply of seeds to grow and new varieties to develop without having to hand pollinate. And it's a really easy way of finding the fertile females in your collection.

Have you tried growing the seeds you've found to create new varieties?
If so, were you successful and what were your findings?
I've heard seeds found in 'edible' bananas are hard to germinate too

Here's a photo of a couple of the hybrid Blue Java seedlings from the seeds in the previous photos.

This is really easy and once you get involved with breeding bananas you'll probably have thousands of new varieties. I stopped naming and counting them a long time ago.

I always recommend starting with the easy and highly fertile crosses first and later try the ones that are more difficult.

Just because someone says something is difficult doesn't necessarily mean it's difficult. I've been sharing a lot of my variegated banana seeds and they are super easy too germinate but there's always going to be people that will think it's difficult. I always tell people to throw them on the ground somewhere and remember where you threw them. A few days ago I received a photo from an org member that threw the seeds outside before winter and they just sprouted now. It's really cool to grow variegated bananas from seed.

That's truly amazing, thanks for all the insight :nanadrink:
I'd love to grow my very own edible banana from seed just to see what it turns out to be.
And you also find seeds in your variegated bananas, that's like finding gold! Amazing!

I'm just a backyard grower so I can only dream... :ha:

I enjoy working with the variegated seedlings much more than the non-variegated bananas.

Here's something else that might help people.

Banana seedlings are very tough, so don't be concerned with handling or transplanting them.

Eventually my dogs drank the 5 gallons of water and some of the seedlings did die.

What!? You guys are just tossing the seeds like that and letting your dog drink from the bucket!?! :ha::ha::ha:
That's like throwing away gold!

If I had one of those I would guard it with my life and hiss at anything that got close LMAO

So, which are the "easy and highly fertile crosses"?
