Banana Seed Germination Forum As one of the toughest seeds in the plant kingdom to figure out the keys to germination success with, this is a forum with banana seed germination tips. Please entitle posts like "Musa balbisiana," or "Musa cheesmani," etc. People would then post a reply under that heading, sharing their germination successes (and failures), what materials and methods they used, germination percentage, etc.

Default What seeds have sent up multiple sprouts for you?

Thought it might be interesting to find out what species have sent up multiple sprouts from a single seed. So far for me-
Musa acuminata Dwarf China- About 10 of 30 had multiples
Musa cheesmanii- 1 out of about 80
Musa sikkimensisXparadisica 2 of 2 sprouted had multiples
Ensete ventricosum 1 out of about 60 had multiples

Maybe they all do it, just some more frequently?

Kyle,

I just recently sprouted a Musa ornata 'Orange flower' from RPS that sent up two sprouts. That's the first one that's done that for me.

For Helens' hybrid it has been the rule, not the exception here to send up multiple sprouts.

I think it has a lot to do with hybrid origin and of course being polyembryonic. This could be one way though of telling (or at least suggesting) that the seed not a pure species, as it is not normal for wild species but mutations like this are common among hybrid varieties. Just my opinion...

I had greater than 50% germination with 'Daj giant' . The most robust of my seedlings are showing some veriegation . Some are getting nice red stripes in the leaves . About 30% had multiple sprouts , one with five .
I thought that I had lost some of these , they rotted to the ground and I forgot about them . Today I found that most came back and now have several leaves !

Heck, I'm just happy if my banana seeds put up ONE sprout!

I just can't get the things to grow at all. I've planted 300 seeds this spring and got a big whopping 5 plants come up, and those were the free seeds that they sent me. So I put $20 dollars each on those trying to recoup my money.

I can't remember where I got them, but it was someplace where I could buy them by the 100's.

Red tiger sikkimensis is one of the kinds I'm trying.

On a happy note, one of the palm seeds I bought two years ago just sprouted! So I guess don't ever throw things away. Just let them linger in your greenhouse forever.....at least that doesn't hurt as bad as throwing all that money away....

I am wondering if the multiple sprouts are 2 or more embryos in one seed....... I have grown many thousands of rose seeds and once in a while 2 plants will come from one seed..... kinda like twins... oddily sometimes the blooms of these will be different in petal count and color.........

KT, I believe that is what Gabe was referring to above. Though I have never had a seed sprout 2 stems yet, I had not heard of it until today, so I learned something new. Thanks all.

Wasn't she the lead singer of an English punk band in the late 70's?
