Velutina seed growing?
 

I picked some of the nanners off and wanted to try and grow some of the seeds. I soaked them in water for about 1hr and then let them sit out to dry. Now what is needed to grow these guys? When I was a kid I grew prickly pear cactus seeds. Potting soil,small plastic pots,piece of plastic over top of the pot with a rubber band and let the humidity go to work. I live in NC zone 8 so they can be sat outside in pots for alittle longer. Thanks

I soaked mine for 3 days, then put them in a deli box containing a perlite and multipurpose compost 50:50 and put the lid on and put them in my heated propagator at 32 degrees (C) and took them out every evening. So 12 hours warm 12 hours cool. They showed signs of growth after about 4 weeks. Yours will be really fresh so sooner I should imagine. Good luck.

Wow that much work for them huh? I was just hoping that I could soak them and dry them plant in some potting soil and keep moist..?

You may get away with that because they will be so fresh, give it a go and if it doesn't work alternate the temperature. Good luck

I put mine in seed starting mix, give bottom heat and cover with plastic. I have good luck sprouting them but I lose them as seedlings. They turn brown and shrivel. Good luck.

It is bad. I just wonder what infection causes so fast (early) death.

sounds like 'damping off' it's a fungal disease that loves damp conditions. You need to get as much air to them as possible, don't over water and if you can spray the seedlings with a weak (I mean weak, half a teaspoon to 1 litre of water) copper based fungicide, there is something called cheshunt compound, which is available over here, not sure about its availabilty over in the states. I noticed my velutina being particularly vulnerable to this problem.

i got fresh velutina seeds from someone i have them in peat pods in sealed containers on bottom heat its been 11 days no signs of life. is this normal ? do they take awhile to germ? there in really wet peat should it be dryer will the seeds rot

I think that's normal. If they are fresh they are like planting beans almost 100 percent of them will germinate. From my experience you can expect shoots to appear within 4-6 weeks.
