Seedling issues.
I have recently tried germinating two types of banana seed, Musa balbisiana Atia Black and Musa sikkimensis. From the 20 seed that I bought I have had 4 germinate so far but of the two best once the first leaf is just popping out it withers and dies off.
I first thought it might be a lack of humidity but the second has gone the same way with a more humid environment. Can anyone suggest what the issue might be? |
Re: Seedling issues.
what size are your pots and how much water are you giving them. congrats on getting some to start.

Re: Seedling issues.
The pots are 4cm diameter by 5cm deep, I don't allow them to dry out and would say they are kept wet but not drenched.
I have been leaving them in the propagator which is heated to about 27c, should I be taking them out after they've broken the surface? They are germinating in a coconut coir. Quote:

Re: Seedling issues.
Sounds like damping off, a fungus. They need light and air. Take them out of the propagator as soon as they have germinated this will go some way to solving your problem.

Re: Seedling issues.
Cheers, have taken them out as of last night. Do you think it's worth putting them into 7cm pots at this point?

They should be OK for now - be sure not to over water also
