| Banana Seed Germination Forum As one of the toughest seeds in the plant kingdom to figure out the keys to germination success with, this is a forum with banana seed germination tips. Please entitle posts like "Musa balbisiana," or "Musa cheesmani," etc. People would then post a reply under that heading, sharing their germination successes (and failures), what materials and methods they used, germination percentage, etc. |

hi!
new to this, iam 13 years old and live in sweden. now planted my 5 seeds. I 2 planted directly in the soil mix and 3 i had soaked in water in 1 day. now i have a normal spotlight lamp shining at the small pots. and i have like a plastic "fake" greenhouse with a transparent overside. going to get pictures soon. how long will it approxmently take to see some seedlings? EDIT: iam going to thailand this summer in june 18 - july 13(13!!) nad i was wondering if anybody have been there and have seen some seeds there. iam going to bangkok, phuket and ao nang, krabi. so if anyone knows where to shop seeds there say it. /S3B8E Last edited by linkinpark15 : 01-31-2008 at 09:01 AM. Welcome aboard, Linkinpark15... Sounds like you have a GREAT summer trip ahead of you. Wish I could offer ideas of where to shop for seeds. Be sure to get many pictures to share with us when you return home...
As far as the M. velutina seeds go, wish there was a definitive answer to give you. Hopefully you have read through some of the post that was started this past fall on Velutina germination "trials". I personally have not had that much trouble getting them to germinate by simply placing the seeds in a 4" pot and putting the pot in a large baggie to retain moisture. Lenght of time varies greatly from a month or so, to over a year. Best of luck to you and be sure to let us know how they do for you... |

Hey, I'll be in Thailand the same time that you are! I'm taking the trip with the university (UT Knoxville). We get there on June 3 and stay through the 23rd or somewhere around there. We'll be in Bangkok and areas around there. I really wanted to go to the north part of the country to Chiang Mai, but that's not on the itinerary. I know nothing about the area either, except that I can't wait to see it!

Hi and welcome, you can upload pictures in your own album on this site.
Just choose 'Photo Gallery' on the top left of the screen. Under that will appear the button 'My Albums'. You can upload pictures there withour reducing the size first. Also you can create more albums of your own there. Ron |

I think I going to order some more seeds.
But if I put the seeds in water with 25-30C temprature, 2 in 2 days and 1 in 3 days. Will it go faster then if they're in water. Will it take like one month too see something? I can put the seeds longer in water if it goes faster. I have thing that keeps the temprature in the water stable( A thing that you have in aquarium). So whats your advice? Then I am going to plant 2 seeds directly in the soil. You can see my "setup" further down on this page. /S3B8E |

all i can say is that banana seeds wil not germinate guaranteed, it can take from a month to a year or longer, i got experience with alot of palms and eucalyptus species + other exotics, banana seeds are still the hardest sometimes nothing wil germinate even the viable seeds and sometimes they wil geminate by the hundreds.
all i know is that velutina needs a 3 day soak on( 30 C )and a temperature regime about 12 hours 35 C' and 10 hours 25 is the most succesfull. i also heared that a moist fluctation is also succesfull. the only advice i can give is that you must buy alot of seeds to get a good germination % buy 100 or more seeds and if you got a aquarium put the seeds in there under bright light at a warm temp. if you get sick of it and they haven't germinated after a few months or a year or so don't discard them , i heared alot of stories that hundreds of seeds germinated after 2 years. just neglect them for a while and buy other seeds like palm seeds that wil germinate after a short time it wil keep the fun of growing plant out of seeds. there are no seeds that wil germinate after two weeks , it's just pure luck if that happen. Almost everyone says ensete ventricosum is the easiest and fastest species to germinate, wel i have them almost for 6 months now stored at a moist spot at 32 C'. the only way you wil have succes is to have fresh seeds. i buyed 1000 trachycarpus fortunei seeds ( chusan palm) at a dealer and all looked fresh but after i opened the seeds they look old, well it was two years ago and none germinated at 22 C' in two years . this year i got 10 fresh seeds from a friend and they germinated in 10 days. if you pay alot attention to banana seeds it is a waste of time just put em in a good spot and moist em a few times. if you buy seeds from a species look at the native habitat of that species and simulate it by means of moisture and temperature

I have ordered 100 musa velutina seeds from eBay today. The seller was from europe and he had 100% positive feedback. Hope the seeds will work. My grandma is getting 50 seeds from me. I have a sort of heatmat. It warms but at like 35-40 C. It's that ok? I usually don't have it on.
EDIT: If I use HB-101, will they grow faster then? Last edited by linkinpark15 : 02-05-2008 at 05:03 AM. |

40 C can kill the seeds, 35 C is the maximum.
HB 101 won't let your plants grow faster however it contains alot of minerals and its a good product to --COMBINE with other products, but still if i were you i wouldn't waste my money on it. it has not enough Nitrogen which bananas like, i recommend a good balanced grain fertilizer with the numbers 14-14-14 or 16-16-16 its cheap and effective. just supplement your banana plants with minerals in powder form its also cheap. a friend of me also uses alot of poducts like HB 101 but his plants in his garden are not bigger or better and certainly not faster growing.

Ok.
I am going to "scarified" some seeds I have ordered. Some of the "scarified" seeds I am going to put in water for 72 hours. And the others is going to a 3 day soak. And some just plant directly. |

untreatened seeds ( seeds without scarification etc ) have a better or the same germination rate, Scarification wil increase the risk of fungal attack.

scarifying is a bad plan, I tried both ways last year and scarification in Musa in my experience and in various studies and other postings doesn't help. It will just encourance fungal growth and rotting.
