Nice fresh seed, about 85/90% germination rate. Conditions are heated glass greenhouse, bottom heat. Seed was very fresh.

Wow!!!!! Where are you, Joe? USA? Europe? And how many seeds did you plant lol there must be loads there! What kind of temps were they at, and did you give them any fluctuation?

Thanks, take care

Pete

Re: Musa 'Darjeeling Giant'

I'm in New Jersey USA. The seed was not prepared as that does not do anything (in my opinion) but I don't know what you mean, maybe soaking? What else would you do, maybe knick the outer shell? But this was very fresh seed, and I think that this is the only issue with banana seed propagation.

They were sown in Pro Mix PGX and put on a bottom heat that is set at 90 degrees. Sunny days would see temps in at least the 80s or higher in the greenhouse.

But yeah I have a ton of them. I was going to list them for sale on here but it says I need credits or something. I don't know if any nursery people read this though who would be interested in those quantities.

We would be interest in same, as we live in COLD climate winters!

believe with your banana bucks you buy credits to post sales or auctions.

Hey Joe! Dude, I'm sorry I didn't mention the "bananabucks" thing. They just started it on here. I have no idea how you could post a for sale add, but seeing as you have several hundred of those babies to get rid of, I'm sure Jarred can figure something out. Or maybe I can just give you mine.

Last year when I was growing my first one, I was was like "damn this thing grows so fast you could actually sell a crap load of 5 gallon plants in one season, started from seed in December". Nice seedlings, I wish I had a greenhouse.

Has anybody got some more infor on the species maybe?
Just a collection of Big Sikki's from Dajeerling, or real separate characteristics?
Regards,
Remko.

It's definatly a hybrid, and based on the leaf characteristics likely a balbisiana hybrid.

Re: Musa 'Darjeeling Giant'

Nobody's done any DNA work on it yet, and that's not likely to happen anytime in the near future, so we will be left to speculate as to what its parentage (other than sikkimensis) is. It does have balbisiana leaf characteristics, as Kyle said, but so do a lot of other bananas. Seeing as how balbisiana grows nearby (relatively), it's not too much of a stretch to think that it could be.

Re: Musa 'Darjeeling Giant'

Yup thats my understanding of it

Sikkimensis X Balbisiana

Impressive germination %... WOW springs to mind.
