I grew this from seed.

I thought it would be fun to see pictures of plants grown from seed.

One of the few bananas I've grown from "seed to seed"...well almost at least (this plant didn't make seed, but its the thought that counts!)

He popped up and looked so good I named him "Spike." He was growing so fast I decided to change his name to "Speedy." That nice big leaf came out and I thought that maybe "Leif" would be a good name. I had a dome over him and I guess the humidity caused a case of the white fuzzies and it looked like "Crash" was most appropiate. I dug him up and dipped his roots in fungicide and potted him up in straight perlite but he kept crashing. So anyhow "Looser" was looking so bad I just hated looking at him and had thought of adding him to the compost pile. He started putting out a little sprial leaf. I thought no way he'd pull though this but "Comeback Kid" added another leaf, small and deformed. "Tiny" put out another bigger leaf and another. Wow, I gave him a little water soluable fertlizer to help him along. "Spots" has nice nitrogen burns on all 4 leaves. Oh well I repotted him up tonight and I hope to rename him soon.

"Killer"

Hey Michael, "Killer " should be you, if you succeed. I prefer "Die Hard" :ha: With this name, at least you can have "Die Hard 2", Die Hard 3" or the latest "Die Hard 4".....:ha::ha::ha:

Re: I grew this from seed.

Die Hard would be perfect. Since its was nitrogen burn I even thought of Bernie or Nitro. If he crashes out Bernie as in "Weekend at Bernie's" would fit. But if he grows big and majestic I like Nitro. I don't know though Pukie is kinda growing on me.

Killer

Did you see my definition of the Pukie word in the other thread on Germination? :ha::ha::ha:

Here's part of a bunch of the Musa acuminata subsp sumatrana aka Rojo aka Zebrina. They are about 3 months old from seed. The growth is slow to this point. Once the leaves get the maroon blotching, they grow very fast. They put up a new leaf once every 3.5 days.

That's so cool Gabe to have grown your M. balbisiana x M. dasycarpa from seed and have it bloom. Man you set the rung pretty high there.

Loved seeing all your pictures, I hope one day I will post a picture and can brag, for now I'll just listen to all you have been telling me and I hope I do it right.

Ensete superbum

I really love this species. I bought a bunch of old seeds and managed to get 3/10. They got too big for the pot so I had to transfer them to my nursery to the ground. It is approx 1 yr old in this pix. I just gotta get more. I like the common name, Bird's Nest Banana cos if I didn't trim the leaves it looks like the Bird Nest's fern, Asplenium nidus.

I am going to get lots more sds and use this plant for landscaping at my nursery. Note the water clogged pot. At this size, it seems to enjoy it but not when young whereby they prefer a very porous soil.

Hey Michael whats up buddy? I have been trying but with no luck... I'm thinking it was not a good idea ordering nana seeds off of ebay... Total waste of time... but I'll keep trying... Just remember I'll stop by this summer to check out your plants & cocktail or two..... Your plant looks great!!!

Variegated Musa beccarii!
This was germinated on Feb '09. I got only 4/50 even though the sds were listed as fresh when I bought them. Let's hope it will stay like this as it grows. Being variegated, the growth is slow and I did not give it fert cos I don't want it to build up strength and turn all green.
