got Ensete Glaucum banana seeds coming

That is if my ebay is international? I assume it is. I need to know once I get these how to sprout them? I have no clue.

I've had limited success using moist perlite in ziplocks or storage containers floated in my aquarium at 80 degrees. Everything germinates in there like crazy except musa and ensete! lol I did germinate a couple ventricosums with that method. My last success has been with ensete superbum sown in pro mix in a flat with bottom heat. The soil is around 75 degrees. Increasing it to 85 to 90 would probably be better. I've had 4 sprout so far of about 50 in 3 weeks. It seems a lot of it depends on the lot of seeds weather they are fresh, with mature embroys, stored proper etc. The good news is that ensete is much easier to germinate than musa. Also, you may want to prepare yourself if you do get sprouts in that they can crash out if not planted in a very good draining media and carefully monitor the moisture. I think every one here that has germinated them have crashed a few cause we just want to pamper them and end up over watering. I'm excite to see some pics this summer of them growing in your ponds!

My setup is pretty simple but here are some pics:

When they sprout I put them in a styrofoam cup with 1/2 pro mix and 1/2 perlite.

The guy in the middle is a ensete ventricosum from seed. In front of him is a little basjoo pulled off a rotting corm.

I don't mean to dash your hopes Vickie, but i have had such horrible results with eBay-bought seeds for bananas. I have had hundreds of them sit forever in perfect germinating conditions, only to get a less than 5% germination rate.

Okay what is pro mix? I have an aquarium set up I am sprouting water lily tubers in. It is at about 85*F. I can float a little container in it covered. And you say maybe pearl-lite. Can you still buy that stuff at walmart or Earl Mays?

If Walmart doesn't have it, HD has it. Pro-mix is just a high quality starting mixture. Most big box stores carry it. I think it is made by Premier Horticulture. I know that I bought some at HD before, too.

You can get perlite in the garden section at Walmart. I think they carry Shultz brand. Here is a link of what your looking for:

Schultz :: Perlite - 20258

Promix is just a peat based potting soil. A lot of people like it and I've had good success with it. Here is a link to Premier's distributors for promix:

Premier Horticulture – PRO-MIX growing mixes & Peat Moss: The ultimate growing performance

If I were to try it right now I'd soak the seeds for at least 3 days in water. I just run warm (not over 130) water in a small bowl or glass and change it every day. Then I'd use a deli container like Tog uses. For some reason I think the clear tops to let light in may make a difference. Or use a container and use saran wrap over the top to keep the humidity up. I would use straight moist potting soil. The old tried and true method is to squeeze it in your hand to where only a few drops come out (personally I make it just a bit wetter). Then just float it in the aquarium at 85 degrees or put it on a heat mat at between 75 to 90. Then don't be digging in there to see what's happening. Just watch it and wait till you see sprouts. There are great guides in the germination section. Ensete is just a little different in that you don't have to fluctuate the temps like Musa.
