Not sure what the catch is guys. Florida Variegated (Musa Florida) has been TC'd for a while now. I think you may be thinking of Musa AeAe (Manini). No one has been able to TC that one. They look very similar with subtle differences.

And these are not Musa Florida because…?

Google images of small Musa Floridas and they all look similar to these.

How long ago did you get a Florida for $85? I haven't heard of prices like that since COVID started.

the Florida variegated is one of few plants that people can easily identify as a small plant. most others can only be identified when they fruit.

besides the coloration on the leaves, yours is long and pointy. the shape of the coloration on the leaves make it easily identifiable. valor x has some threads he did last year of the florida with excellent pics.

this is my manini/aeae. the pattern of the coloration is different and so is the shape of the leaf, while the colors are similar to my florida.

the first is the manini and the second is the florida.

It sounds like you don't really know what you have.
Those don't look like Florida to me.

Ok so if they've been TCing them for a while now, who is doing it? There are a very few number of places doing TC, You can message me privately.

You paid $20 for your manini/aeae and $85 for your Florida variegated.

Is the Florida variegated more valuable because the fruit tastes so much better?

There are many people in the San Diego area selling variegated TC'ed Floridas and TC'ed Nonos. The TC labs outside the US are selling them for under $20.

Just look at the sellers 'ship from address' if it says they ship from San Diego they're probably from the San Diego area.

The reality is there are a ton of hobbyists all over the States that are now importing variegated TC bananas from Asia. Shipping is fairly expensive so they're buying more than they normally would, and selling the excess. Most of my wholesale clients don't even want to buy variegated Florida because the prices are dropping. Orders for A'ea'e have been steadily increasing but as you pointed out many of these sellers will simply change the name of their Florida to A'ea'e. Also orders for the variegated 'Cold Hardy' ABB types have jumped up the most and that's a plant that even the least skilled among us can grow and keep in beautiful condition.

Just an FYI. Gabe had a look and said these were probably Floridas but still too young to be complexly sure.
Gabe said they were basically followed by some Thai people on one of their last expeditions and they grabbed specimens and started TCing them. He knows this because they are using the Names Gabes group gave them in a paper written about the plants gathered on that expedition.

FYI, Gabe was referring to the variegated Nono when he wrote this and not the variegated Florida. The variegated Florida has been around commercially long before Gabe's first expedition. The quickest way of distinguishing between young TC Florida and Nono is to put them in sunlight. Sunlight causes the white on the leaves of the Nono to turn pink.
