Default Ornatas for pickup, Mobile Alabama

I transplanted my ornata mat and have lots left over, a few stems and tons of roots/corms. Free for pickup, I hate to throw them away. Call me at 251-234-2303 if you're local and want to come by.

Russell

Hey Russell,

Do they bloom reliably for you every year. I'm probably 5 degrees warmer than you most days but as you know either of us could get the killing freeze any year.

That's generous of you. I would like some. I'm down in the bayou, Bayou La Batre. After everyone else has had a chance to choose what they want, I'll take all that you have left over. I would hate to throw them away too.

Charles, they didn't freeze down this year but did the last 2 winters in a row. They come up fast and start blooming in no time at all. I treat them like gingers, when the p stem finishes i cut it off at the ground. They'll bloom until a freeze gets them. I may go to my folks in FWB this weekend, maybe we can meet somewhere in P'cola along the way Friday afternoon. Next week I may be back over to see my chiropractor.

Terry, there will be plenty for you.

Thanks, 'preciate it. I'll pot some up and offer them for sale during Plantasia at the Mobile Botanical Gardens, and use some to dress up my neighbors back yard and..........hey, I could go on and on, so you know I'll be happy to get them.

Thanks,

Terry,

If they wanted them at MBG they'd already be there! I help out with the plant sales, mostly coordinating the connoisseur's corner.

Well, I shouldn't have said that anyway because I just assumed that they would have vendor booths at the plant sale and as it turns out they don't. We did have vendor booths at the plant sale in Pensacola, but not here in Mobile.

I talked with Barbie there today and she said no vendors but she was interested in my gingers. I'm going to pull a list together for her. If I have something the gardens need then I'll donate it.

Nope, no vendors. Have you been to the sales before? Top notch, nothing like it anywhere for miles. Barbie works her butt off, as do MANY others. I give them a lot of the oddball stuff I come up with to propagate at the greenhouse and sell, a couple of Japanese woodland perennials and a cool, big evergreen hydrangea this spring.

What gingers do you have?

Chance was it you that said they had edible ginger? I'd like some of that.

Darkman, I don't remember if I ever said it, but yes, I've got edible ginger. It's not up yet and I'd have to see how many I've got. I'll set one aside for you.

No, I'v never been to the show here. I've only been here for a couple of years. I moved over from Pensacola. (I'm originally from Birmingham) But, I do plan on going this year.

I've got dozens of gingers. I've got alpinia, hedychium, Costus, Curcuma, Kaempferia, Globba, Zingiber. They'll be on my web site, which I hope to get launched this week.

I hope I can find................well, I'm having a senior moment.....can't thing of the name of the hydrangea that I want and hope they'll have at the sale. It's the one that grows wild. I'm kind of into planting native plants. I found some native azaleas and I've ordered some dogwood, a sourwood (one of my favorite trees) and several others, including redbud.

Well, I don't know where you ordered from, but you have to be careful. (personally, I wouldn't order anything I could find so easily locally) Just because sourwood a dogwood are southern trees doesn't mean you can get them from Tennessee and expect good results here on the coast. That's the beauty of this plant sale, trees grown from local/coastal seed sources by people who know what they're doing. If you expect decent, reliable fall color out of a sourwood you better buy local. And there will be a couple of named selections of dogwoods, 'Weaver' is one and I can't remember the other, both from north Florida so they're perfect here.

There are always plenty of native azaleas at the sale because 2 of the top hybridizers/growers are right here in Semmes - Maarten Van Der Giessen and Tommy Dodd. You won't find a better camellia collection offered anywhere.

Native hydrangea - quercifolia or arborescens? There will be plenty of H. q selections, and probably a few H. a's. They can be difficult down here, a little picky about soil and such.

If you're within 100 miles of Mobile and have any interest in plants you don't need to miss this sale. Best selection is Thursday night at the preview party (not free), then it's open Friday through Sunday. The list will be on the MBG website soon.

My azaleas I got from Tommy Dodd at the wholesale show last month. Sourwood I'm getting from several different sources as well as the family homestead up near Birmingham, where I'm also getting some redbuds, dogwoods, sassafras and hydrangea.

The hydrangea that had slipped my mind was the oakleaf hydrangea. I don't know how well it'll do here because I remember it growing in rock outcroppings at home. I'm willing to try anything. If it grows then that's good, if it doesn't........oh, well.

I wont be going to the show until Sat. I remember in Birmingham that opening night was dress-up night, ladies in gowns and jewels and the men in suits and that's just not my style.

I'll probably see you there since you said you'd be helping out.

We ain't Birmingham, thank you Jesus. It's "get the best selection night", not "dress to impress crappy people night". Beer, wine, light food, music and plants. There will be some things that we get in small numbers and they'll be gone by Friday morning, especially if Finch writes about them. People come armed with the list, it's always a lot of fun. People fuss when they show up Saturday and what they wanted is gone.

Oakfeaf hydrangeas are fine here, even in my midtown muck if I'm careful. Drainage is the key. Don't know if that will be the same for you. They did great In Ft. Walton, so as long as they don't drown they should be fine.

Oh, forgot to mention, the preview party tickest are 20 bucks - or something like that.

I'm sorry to hear that you feel that way about Birmingham. It was were I was born and spent the first 18 years of my life so of course I have a soft spot in my heart for where I grew up. But it has always been that way between Mobile and Birmingham. Mobile has a reputation of looking down on Birmingham. But Birmingham just keeps plugging along, getting bigger everyday.

Yeah, I knew the tickets were $20.00, I read it on the web-site. I may go that night.

I love Mobile and don't want to live anywhere else. I can have a problem with drainage, so I usually use raised beds.

See you later. Oh, when is a good time to pick up some of the ornatas? I'll get that list of gingers together and you can see if you want one. I know I have lots of white butterfly and a few Disney. I'll let you know.

Nothing against B'ham, really. I love the mountains, they remind me of where I lived in Japan. Things are just more laid back here on the coast.

I'll give you a shout next week. I want you to see my gingers in the summer too. I have tried a bunch of those orange/apricot hedychiums, and only one is worth a damn. I think it's Disney. Do you have Zingiber collinsii 'Silver Streaks' ?

Many thanks to Russell,

For I now have two new bananas. He dropped off an Ornata and an African Red while passing through Pensacola. I have planted both and will hopefully be rewarded with blooms and pups. We had a short but enjoyable visit during which I had to keep apologizing for the way things looked. This isn't the most attractive time in my garden.

Thanks again Russell
