My velutina's fruit is popping open and so it is time to harvest some seeds, if anyone is interested. I did this last year and not a lot of folks had much success germinating them. Before I go through the hassle of separating the seeds from the fruit, I want to see if anyone wants to try their hand at getting them to sprout. If anyone wants to try them, let me know and I will start a list and harvest only enough seeds to fill requests. Pics of the parent plant can be found in my photo gallery. Let me know if anyone is interested...

I'll try them! I've been wanting to try starting bananas from seed and I think I remember reading that velutina was one of the easier ones to germinate.

Re: Musa velutina seeds...
I'd like to try some again.
I was one to get seeds last year, but for some reason, not even one grew. I've grown banana plants from seeds before without many problems. I guess I'll try doing it like Canna seeds this time.

Alright Randy, I kept trying to talk myself out of it, but can't anymore.
If you want, you can just send me a section of the fruit and I can clean the seeds on my own, lol. and pm sent too...

The seeds arrived today. I put them in a clear plastic container after soaking them in water for two hours. They are in Miracle Grow 'Moisture Control' potting soil outdoors with the lid on. They will recieve direct sunlight in the morning hours and should see a change of temp around 20*F per day. Thank you again for being so generous and taking the time to send the seeds. I will post an update whenever I have to move them indoors for winter.

Re: Musa velutina seeds...
Hey everyone,

Any correspondence from here on, please post on this thread: http://www.bananas.org/showthread.php?p=20174#post20174 This will help insure that everyone involved will be able to see what each of us are doing... Thanks for the input and all the efforts!!!! |
