Castor Bean (Ricinus Communis) For Trade!!
 

For the next 3-4 weeks, I will be harvesting my castor bean seeds and offering them for trade or whatever... Below is a pic of the two plants I will be harvesting from. They grew to over 10' this year and the seeds I started them from were in my garage for about 2 years...
If anyone is interested in growing some of these great tropical looking plants, e-mail or private message me and we can work something out...

You're plants always look great! I love the red form of the castor bean but haven't specifically grown it for a couple of years now. I've had a couple of "volunteers" come up the past two years but they haven't done much. Seeing yours makes me want to grow them again next year. Keep up the great work!

I totally understand your cautiousness.... I waited until all 5 of my daughters were old enough to be taught not to eat anything outside that we don't give to them... Always better to be on the safe side....

Randy it's a real shame as when we moved to France and I started the Exotic gardening I had a two year old and now I hav a Two year old again.
I bet Ricinus grow great here too . Perhaps next year :-(
Some people say if you cut all the flowers off and avoid the plant setting seed then there is nothing for the Kids to pickup , perhaps I'll do that as I'm home most of the time I can keep an eye on the plants . They have such a different look to the rest of my Exotic stuff that they would fit in well.
Talking about different forms does anyone have a pup of Tetrapanax Steroidal Giant going spare ?

Hey Steve,
My neighbor has the Tetrapanax Papyrifera Steroidal Giant. Unfortunately, It has not bloomed, nor seeded, just come up from the existing 'rhizome'.

It has lived up to its expectations of getting up to 12 feet tall and having 3', yes three foot wide leaves though.

I don't know if that is all you need to worry about.... (seeds).... From my understanding, the sap can be very irritating to the skin... They recommend wearing long sleeves and gloves when handling... I don't, and haven't had any issues, but someone with sensitive skin might....

Taylor , I guess I'll have to get one from Plant Delights , I have T-Rex growing in France but it's not available here , I'll be happy to grow the Steroidal Giant instead.

Randy , some people have skin problems wuth the fuss on Tetrapanax to, as i understand it up to half the plants in anyones garden are toxic in one way or another.

Curious about Castor Bean seed here. We planted some Castor Bean seeds that looked like Pinto beans, kinda speckled and similar color to Pintos. Yeah, I know, different beans and Castors are not edible, but I am just using the Pintos as comparison for color and markings.

We were recently given some Castor bean seeds that are black. Can anyone help me identify this seed - is it a different species? They are not only black, they are about twice the size of the speckled ones.

I would love to see a pic of the black ones. I have never seen any solid color. Mine are, as you call it, pinto bean marked.... LOL Would love to try some of the black ones and see what I get if you have any extra, let me know...

EXTREME CAUTION when planting CASTOR BEAN SEEDS. they are highly poisonous and there is no going back from poisoning in some cases. should not be planted where there are small/all children. If one seed is ingested, that is the end of that person.
This is not a scary tactic. Please be careful.

Beautiful plant, very dangerous, as Carmensol said.
We've had some ever since I was little and the danger and fear was instilled into me and still is just to watch out.

well from a forensic point of view...if someone you dont like very much happens to eat one of these little things...it could be traced back to the bean and not you...i dont know what happened officer we had black beans and rice and i feel ok...oh by the way his name was earl. lol

ha ha ha. you dont think of things like that( well most people dont) till you start taking the classes im taking. however ive always thought like that. oleander, wolves bane, poison sumack,now caster bean...ha ha ha ha( with an evil sound.) hey still have any seeds left?

how long did it take your seeds to germinate? or did you buy the plant? my seeds had been in the dirt for almost a week.

I guess it took them about a week to germinate. I got the seeds from Randy. I planted them about an inch deep if not less. How warm has been there? They should start emerging any day soon.
